This model is also quite a bit better at retaining heat than the plastic version. It's almost too good at it in fact. I find myself unscrewing the lid just to get the coffee down to drinkable levels. once it's at ideal temp it will stay there for hours if you happen to be a slow coffee drinker. If you want some coffee more immediately then you had best be a good judge of water temperature when you but the kettle on.
The only thing i miss about my old plastic one was it's transparency. there was never any question if i had added too much water or if the coffee was done. I could see it quite easily. But if that's all i have to give up for longevity then so be it. I imagine it would be hard to add cream or sugar as well but i drink mine black so that is a nonissue.
If you want quality fresh black coffee or loose leaf tea on the go without the cost or waste of a coffee shop then look no further. Convenient, sturdy and environmentally friendly, that's this press/mug combo
My press appears to be working fine but it works better in concept than in practice. You need be very careful pouring grounds in, making sure none of its sticks to the sides on the top or you'll be drinking grit. Looking back, I'm not entirely sure why I bought this instead of just buying a french press and using my normal mug. This solution is more hassle than it's worth.
If the filter did go to the bottom when this thing was empty, you wouldn't be able push down the press the whole way when you had coffee grinds in there! This would leave a spot where the press handle sticks out, also leaving a gap where liquid and heat can escape. Pushing the handle down closes this gap!
Basically I think the mug is perfect. The seal is awesome, I haven't had any leaking. It keeps it hot for at least 2 hours. The press handle is the perfect size.
Keeps coffee hot and it is easy to use. If you are a french press coffee "snob" and you take your coffee black (with or without a sweetner) this product is for you. Makes having a high quality cup of coffee easy to bring along. I make coffee at home, it brews in the car on my way to the gym. After the gym, the coffee is still hot and fresh. No aftertaste, no trip to the coffee shop & no waiting in line.
There are a few extra steps compared to a drip machine, but it is worth the effort. Much cheaper than a k-cup and you control the strength.
Biggest disadvantage is adding milk/cream. Another knock is, it is a bit heavy and a bit wide.
Best if you grind your own coffee.
The only thing I don't like so much is that being a french press, the grounds stay in the cup with the coffee, so as hot as this thing stays, basically your coffee is continuing to brew for as long as it's in there. It can make the coffee taste very bitter after a bit. If you are purchasing any travel french press, be prepared to drink it quickly, or be prepared for some strong and probably kinda bitter brew.
