The French press coffee system is what BODUM is most known for. We've produced millions of presses; we've added more designs, more sizes, more features like double wall glass and a lid that closes completely between pours. As far as we were concerned, we knew everything there was to know about the French press. So imagine our surprise when a customer tells us they've discovered the best way to make ice coffee with a French press. We've tried it their way and we have to agree - it's fabulous. And simple - which fits our philosophy perfectly. So here's how it goes: First you put the ground coffee in the jug as usual. Then you add cold water and put the jug in the fridge overnight. In the morning you press down the plunger - et voila - you have the most smooth tasting ice coffee you can imagine. Enjoy it black or with milk and let yourself be surprised. The BEAN comes with two lids: one for the fridge overnight and one with a plunger to press down the coffee grounds in the morning. The 1.5 l BEAN Ice Coffee Maker is made from plastic, silicone and stainless steel.

* use coarse grind
* filter through a paper filter into your cup to avoid silt
* soak the press screen periodically in bleach/soap/vinegar as particles get between the screens and develop mold
* remember to set it up the afternoon before if you want good coffee for the next morning 😊
For anyone in the market for a cold brew coffee maker, you probably already know this... but NOTE: it will take 12+ hours to allow the coffee to brew in your refrigerator overnight! But it's well worth the time to get a nice, smooth cup of coffee.
The plastic carafe seems to be pretty solid and both lids (the overnight lid for freshness and french press / pouring lid for serving) fit VERY SNUG in the carafe. Almost too snug (it can be difficult to get them in/out without some effort).
But for the price, the size and quality match my expectations and it performs exactly how I would expect. It says that these are dishwasher safe, but I preferred to hand wash to make sure it was cleaned thoroughly and gently.
The plunger lid is made of two pieces (not including the plunger mechanism) that occasionally come separated and need to be snapped back together. Hopefully this doesn’t become a major issue, although it was inexpensive enough if I need to replace it.
I do wish the carafe was one solid piece of plastic, or that the clear part was removable for washing. I have had a couple coffee grounds get stuck like in other reviews, but they’ve worked their way out.
My cold brew recipe is 48 oz of water and 6 oz of coarsely ground coffee, brewed for 18-20 hours at room temp. This fills the carafe right to the tippy top of the clear part. The flat lid has an airtight gasket that doesn’t let the water overflow when putting it on. I then pour it through a paper filter and it yields about 32 oz of coffee. While the french press filter is a fine mesh and has a gasket around it, there will be some silt left behind in the paper filter. Pour over ice and enjoy!
Prior to purchase I read the reviews, and there were some not so positive ones. Still I bought it and simply hoped I'd be one of the happy customers down the road. As I read in reviews the coffee can get stuck in between the clear pitch, the bodum plastic surrounding it. Happened to me and I'm bummed but hey the price was right, the product description was honest and the multiple reviews positive & negative were on point. So yeah...
