Then there are the claims of keeping coffee hot "4 to 6 hours." That's optimistic. I tested a few of these by filling with boiling water (212 F), sealing, and measuring the temperature every hour and found that after three hours the temperature has dropped to approximately 130 F -- the same approximate temperature as hot tap water. Testing was conducted inside a 68-degree home and the lid was sealed after each temperature measurement. You can expect a greater temperature drop in an outdoor environment.
The cup isn't leak proof, but it is leak resistant; if it rests on its side it will most certainly leak coffee all over whatever you didn't want exposed to coffee. Keep that in mind of you thought you were just going to throw it in a backpack, purse, manpurse, etc.
I have compared this head-to-head with the Stanley Travel Press and the GSI Commuter Press and can offer these comparisons: the Stanley keeps hot coffee hot for nearly five hours in outdoor environments and is truly leak proof if completely sealed. It's also bulky and won't fit in many cup holders. The GSI leaks if the inner cup/press isn't fully seated.
I have since bought additional Bodum travel presses for gifts and consider it the best all-around travel press with the Stanley a very close second. I wouldn't consider a GSI for anything.
The defective part is part of the plunder and hasn’t altered it’s operation as of yet.
This model is also quite a bit better at retaining heat than the plastic version. It's almost too good at it in fact. I find myself unscrewing the lid just to get the coffee down to drinkable levels. once it's at ideal temp it will stay there for hours if you happen to be a slow coffee drinker. If you want some coffee more immediately then you had best be a good judge of water temperature when you but the kettle on.
The only thing i miss about my old plastic one was it's transparency. there was never any question if i had added too much water or if the coffee was done. I could see it quite easily. But if that's all i have to give up for longevity then so be it. I imagine it would be hard to add cream or sugar as well but i drink mine black so that is a nonissue.
If you want quality fresh black coffee or loose leaf tea on the go without the cost or waste of a coffee shop then look no further. Convenient, sturdy and environmentally friendly, that's this press/mug combo
