The actual diet plan itself contradicts some of the "fat bombs" listed in the book, especially concerning sodium intake. I totaled up the sodium intake for a sample day on the diet and it was over 4000mg...much more than what was suggested earlier in the book. The diet plan also reminded me of some type of pamphlet that would be given out at a Weight Watcher's meeting or something. I'm sure the diet plan worked great in a controlled setting with the test subjects, but it does nothing to educate people in the real world. My opinion of course.
The resistance training plan is also very vanilla with not much in the form of progression or advancement. Again, I realize that this book was probably intended more towards beginner trainees, but I would have thought that Ellington, with the experience that he has, would have put more into this. If you are a beginner who is unable to perform body weight exercises in a accentuated negative fashion and you do not have a gym membership and spotter...you should definitely look elsewhere.
Long story short, Ellington could have done much better with this book. I don't know if he was so excited by the test subject results that he just had to get this written and printed ASAP, but the book just does not stack up to some of Rodale's other options out there. If you are a beginner and are trying to decide on a fat loss book to purchase, I would look at some of Rodale's other books like The Metabolism Advantage or The Abs Diet, both of which have much more detailed diet and fitness plans...and then google some of Ellington's older articles on negative training and HIT.
You can also have my "free" fat bombs of advice: eat healthy, preferably real foods that are not processed, drink plenty of water, be more active and less sedentary, get more sleep, push yourself when you train, and allow time for adequate recovery...there I just saved you from having to waste money on the majority of diet books out there.
I thought the only way to build muscle is to go to a gym and use machines there. This was prohibitive to me because it's quite a drive for me to the nearest gym, and also it can be expensive. I don't currently work; my husband's salary is quite thinly stretched as it is, without adding a $100 monthly gym membership into the mix.
So I did some (lots and lots of) research and found The Body Fat Breakthrough. I got excited. I could do eccentric exercises at home! I had an old set of dumb bells and I could do resistance/strength training exercises using my own body weight, also. I can take a walk after dinner every night for the cardio workout I need. I don't have to buy lots of different foods like other diet plans tell you to do. I can eat what I cook for the rest of the family; I'm just keeping track of portions and calories.
I bought the Kindle edition of the book for $9.99 and a set of stretchy bands for $8, and that has been my total investment. By the way, the stretchy bands are too easy for me now. Mr Darden says you will quickly build strength following his plan and it's true.
In the 35 days since I began this plan, I've lost 12 inches and 14 pounds. I didn't have a body fat meter, but I wish I had started with one. I know I've lost more fat than the 14 pounds, and have gained a little bit of muscle weight. The body fat meter would help figure out how much. I am coming up on the first six week period for this plan, and I am very happy with the plan. I may take one week off, but I will definitely begin another six week course. I am looking forward to being healthier and looking more fit. I hope I can inspire someone out there to start their own healthy journey.
