Powerline replaced my first cables for free because they had more than 5 kinks within 10 months of use and that was commendable of Powerline customer service. I was lead to believe that the first cables were an anomaly. The second set of cables developed several kinks and broke after 12 months of use. (I didn't use it for 4 months after surgery if you are doing the math on my ownership.)
There are several concerns about the cable durability. First, if the company goes out of business, your machine will be useless after the cables break because there is no place to get replacements other than Powerline. Second, you might hurt yourself in the middle of an exercise when the cables break. (This happened to me.) There is no warning when the cable will break so replace them annually if there are any signs of distortion or kinks. Third, replacing the cables is not an easy job. It takes 2 people and some finesse to thread the cables through the pulleys and then adjust them.
I belonged to a gym for several decades and never saw cables self destruct as quickly as these Powerline cables. Yes, my gym had professional machines costing 5X as much but they also endured constant daily use.
Powerline should request that their Chinese vendor increase the diameter of the wire and quality of the plastic coating on the wire. It is ridiculous that the wires start kinking within 6 months of use. I consider that defective merchandise.
Item ships in 4 boxes: 3x50lb with weights and a big 8-ft long one with other parts. Once you pull out separate parts from the box (bars, seat, nuts and bolts) a single person can carry the main frame easily (maybe 50 lb in weight).
Took me about one hour to assemble once I got the parts into the basement. Instructions in the manual are good enough. For assembly you'll need two wrenches (I used a wrench and a ratcheting socket, allen wrenches are included). I put it together alone, but would be easier with a partner.
When I was buying it, I was somewhat worried about the height. My basement has 81" ceiling, the machine is listed as 80" tall. In reality, my copy is about 79" from the bottom to the top of the high cable roller. Beware though - if you try to do standing shoulder press, 81" ceiling is not high enough. I'm short, but was hitting the ceiling with handles. No biggie anyway, just do seated shoulder presses.
The quality of the metal, welds and paint is good. I like a little foam pad around the middle of the pulldown bar - can't count how many times I hit the back of my neck with the bar before. Minor gripes are as follows: (1) The bars for foam rollers are passed directly through the holes in the frame, without pass-through tubes. I expect either the walls of the frame or, more likely, the bars to start wearing out with time. Will see. (2) Foam rollers are held in place by plastic caps. Not sure how long those would last. Push comes to shove I'll machine those out of aluminum. (3) The short handle for low cable needs some grease - the collar moves a bit rough around the handle.
My wife and I worked out on it. Works just fine - smooth cable movement, good range of adjustment.
Overall I am pleasantly surprised with the initial quality of the machine. It is not the cheapest, but saving a couple of hours worth of work in assembly, seemingly quality materials, and very compact size are worth the price difference, IMHO.
For those asking if additional weights can be added. Short answer - not without replacing the adjustment rod. It is not long enough to accommodate more plates. The machine seems solid enough to handle maybe additional 50 lbs, but that would definitely stress the plastic rollers.
There are four cable positions Get rid of the lat bar and biceps curl and for a few bucks purchase padded Anasazi and biceps curl bars. They work beautifully and are safer. Get a better ab crunch padded harness for the second highest cable and lengthen it with a carabiner and you will be a lot more comfortable. Plus you can also use a rope for triceps pull down at this level.
I use this multistation gym along with an incline/decline weight banch, sit up/back extension bench, TRX. weights, resistance bands, two inch folding gym pad and adjustable step up for legs. All accesories are stored in an armoir in the hall outside the bedroom. The equipment looks good. There are three sets of three Anchor Gym hooks powder coated to match the walls which I use for TRX and resistance bands.
The set up looks good and is a pleasure to use.
