With no instructions provided, we just put the silicone cover over our pot and within a few minutes, it was "boiling under" from where the lid meets the pot rim. The seal between the pot and the silicone was weaker than the seal of the little cover on the top of the silicon lid so everything was oozing out under the lid.
I took the lid off and while washing it noticed that the little top *does* come off. It's not attached at all. Don't know why I couldn't originally take it off. Maybe it partially fused together during manufacture/shipment?
So, we tried again but this time offset the center cover slightly so that a few of the vent holes were partially open (see photos). This time, it worked like a charm! Some liquid boiled out through the vent holes but stayed confined to the lid. The stovetop stayed perfectly clean.
Worked perfectly again the next time. Only remaining issue is that it's a bit tricky to lift the lid up to stir the contents without spilling what's trapped in the top of the lid.
She uses this with a 3qt pot (7.5" diam) on a gas stove. The flame is low enough that it doesn't extend past the edge of the pot. The manufacturer's claim that this lid should work with 6-10" pots seems reasonable.
