But he s not alone, with the help of Rhino, his number one fan and loyal partner, and a crafty alley cat names Mittens, they embark on an extraordinary mission filled with high-flying, action-packed stunts. David Sheehan of Hollywood Closeups raves Bolt is Great Disney fun for the whole family. Showcasing the vocal talents of John Travolta and teen sensation Miley Cyrus, and featuring a never-before-seen animated short starring the pint-sized rolling ball of thunder, Rhino, this movie will have your whole family cheering for the good guys and begging for more. Disney's Bolt coming to Blu-ray and Disney DVD on March 24th. Let it begin!!!
Bolt is a funny animated film about a dog who thinks he has superpowers. It is also a movie about friendship, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself. Everyone knows that superheroes on television are not real, but super-dog Bolt (John Travolta) is a canine star who has been carefully raised to believe that he really possesses superpowers. Bolt is completely devoted to his human co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus), so when Penny is captured by the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) in their latest television episode and then Bolt accidentally gets loose in the real world, Bolt sets off on a journey to save her. Bolt is confounded when his super powers are suddenly ineffective, but inspiration strikes and Bolt quickly discovers the mysterious, power-stealing effects of Styrofoam packing peanuts. An encounter with alley cat Mittens (Susie Essman) gives Bolt some eye-opening lessons about being a real dog in the real world, while star-struck, ball-enclosed hamster Rhino (Mark Walton) revels in the opportunity to serve as Bolt's sidekick in the quest to rescue Penny. The trio traverses the United States from waffle house to waffle house on a hysterical quest to find Penny and prove that the relationship between Penny and Bolt is real. In the end, Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino learn that everyone is special in their own way and they discover the true power of believing in oneself and one's friends. Select theaters showed Bolt in Real-D 3-D which features some nice effects, but the film is probably equally enjoyable in the traditional format. A fun film with a nice message and a huge dose of cute, Bolt is good entertainment for the entire family. --Tami Horiuchi

One of the earlier hits of the Disney Animation Studios, Bolt has the look and feel of the better-known Pixar Studios films. However, it proves once again that DAS has the chops to compete with the likes of Pixar. When Pixar lost it's edge and was only making sequels, DAS was creating movies like this. In the years that followed, only a couple of Pixar movies have grabbed me, but every DAS release is a winner.
Bolt is animated in a beautiful 'water-color' background look and is a sight to behold. It's not as beautiful as say, 'The Good Dinosaur', but it holds it's own. All of the characters are well-developed, and range from hilarious (Rhino the hamster) to despicable (Penny's agent guy) to a character that you hate at first to one you learn to love (Mittens). There is lots of action in this movie, befitting of the action-hero roles that Bolt and Penny play.
My entire family LOVES this movie, and we rewatch it all the time. It has lots to keep little ones and grownups alike completely entertained. It is one of the best 'hidden gems' from DAS, and certainly worthy of your collection.
This review is for the Three-Disc Edition, Standard DVD + Digital Copy + Blu-ray.
I was not happy with the quality of Instant Video. The Blu-ray disc looks fantastic.
Because the digital copy was NOT UltraViolet I was able to easily transfer it to iTunes.
This wonderful movie is available in various formats. I strongly recommend the Three-Disc Edition, Standard DVD + Digital Copy + Blu-ray.
Geek talk for those who know what I am talking about, I have a Full HD laptop with Nvida 3D vision and a 17" 120Hz screen, and the 3D version of this movie looks absolutely fantastic. Active-Shutter Technology is so much better on the consumer market than polarization 3D at the moment. And this movie so much the more with so many little things from texturing to fur, it all looks grand.
My only complaint is with the front cover slip. It is one of those 3D ribbed covers but it is very blurry when looking straight on. You have to tilt the cover back and to the right in order to bring the front cover into focus. Not a big deal, but I am picky like that when it comes to presentation aesthetics.
Overall a good deal, and I highly recommend this 3D edition if you are looking to get a copy of BOLT that will last for a long time.
