This would be a 5-star rating but for a few things. The protagonist is fine (I don't mind over the top characters); however, some of the situations were just too easy. An example is Clarke's relationship with her brother. If they were that estranged, their reconnection was simply unbelievable. A number of editing problems, most of them minor, did cause me to lose the plot occasionally, and included some misspellings which changed the direction of a section or two.
Overall, a very interesting and frightening book that I'll definitely recommend. What's next for Clarke? I look forward to finding out.
The protagonist is one Lynn Clarke, a U.S. Secret Service agent who has risen far in the organization. She is being considered for the job of Head of the Presidential Protection Division, but is running into some office politics. That is one branch of the story. The other is more dramatic, even profound. We are told that medical science has at last discovered how to thwart the rejection process in organ transplants. An immediate consequence has been the development of a hugely lucrative, frequently criminal, market in human spare parts. This involves Lynn because she is one of a tiny minority whose blood contains an antigen, the “Bombay Factor”, which makes her incapable of being a receptor/donor of an implant except with another member of the group. This distinction brings her to the attention of the Zarus Company, which exercises near-monopolistic control over this new industry. In particular, its president develops a sick, blood-based sexual attraction to her, and she is constantly menaced by his attempts to physically possess her.
I will not attempt to summarize all the matted plot lines, except to say that they all subtly play on the Creed of the Loser: that he is not to blame for his failures. He is in the power of They, who are out to get him. Lynn is We; spunky, determined, unconquerable, and finally unbelievable. She is also, by the way, a killer herself – of two highway patrolmen in Mexico who unwisely stop her car while she is driving home from Guatemala(!). There is also a trial for treason, an overnight decision by the Supreme Court, and an outbreak of urban riots. See what I mean by ‘matted’?
Not a very convincing story. It is much too highly colored and too crowded, but somehow it works; one keeps plowing on. For that, four stars.
Update: Have finished reading this book. Have given it 5 stars. When I started reading it I was a bit put-off by the subject matter as I found the main villain to be the epitome of evil. As I read on I realize that he was no more horrific or fantastic than some of the characters one hears about in the news these days. A tale of intrigue, sexual deviation, intense greed, selfishness, plain downright evil, as well as determination, and , survival.
I found the story intriguing and interesting, and as always; I rooted for the underdog. Was a tiny bit disappointed with the ending, as I expected a harsher punishment for the villain(s) left alive and and a clearly defined future for the heroine. This ending though seem to leave the door open for a sequel. (Something to look forward to).
I like the book. It was not overwhelmed with too many characters. Very good with descriptions and details - easily enough to follow along an not loose the sense of the story. Not distracting either. Will probably read another of Ray Ronan's books.
This plot was so scary that I had to force myself not to jump to the end to find out what happened!
The story starts slowly and I was a little confused at first, wondering where the horrific scenes of organ donation would go. Suddenly the action kicked off and I couldn't stop reading. I read in front of the TV, in the car, at the dinner table and most of the night! As a person with AB Neg blood - although not Bombay - I could see the direction in which the legal system could actually go in the future and it is terrifying.
Ray Ronan has created a terrific character in Agent Lynn Clarke. I felt immediately sympathetic to her plight when she is shafted by...NO SPOILERS... and when the media and the whole went into overdrive, I was urging her on all the way. The end result of being caught would have been horrific, but this writer is so clever that he managed to present a character and an action plot which are totally believable.
Clarke is a likable person, one in whom I could invest concern, particularly when a private tragedy joins the appalling chaos that her life becomes. - I felt for her immensely.
All I can say is, I do hope Ray Ronan has more Lynn Clarke stories in the pipeline because this character is one who would come over extremely well in a movie or a TV series. Do read it, folks! It is well worth buying.
