Editorial Reviews
Review
Prodigiously researched, Bombs for Peace is graced with the elegant prose style typical of the author, and with his long-held passion for justice. It is so beautifully written that it is hard to put down, and constitutes a damning exposé of Western policy.

From the Inside Flap
This illuminating study describes the genesis of the contemporary doctrine of humanitarian intervention. It is the first comprehensive analysis of Western policy towards the Balkans from the late 1980s on. Previous works have often taken partisan approaches focusing on isolated events rather than the multifaceted conflict of which such events were a part. Though scholarly, the book will also appeal to a wider audience interested in world affairs.

This book is a thorough autopsy of the destruction of Yugoslavia by the US and NATO-countries. It reveals the methodology of the so called International community to serve the interests of the big money and submitting to the will of the US. This autopsy gives clues also to the process in Ukraine and elsewhere, where the interests of the US and Germany come together. This book also shows the meager meaning of democracy when it does not serve the power. It also shows how human suffering does not count. This book gives the reader a full understanding of the state of affairs in the world. This is one of the most important books ever.

Many Democratic Party critics of George W Bush's invasion of Iraq make unfavorable comparisons between the Iraq War and what they considered the justified and successful U.S. attack on the Former Yugoslavia. In fact, the the wars under both Clinton, Bush Jr and Obama had similar humanitarian justifications for their wars and all of the wars had disastrous results for the people of the countries invaded. Western Countries encouraged the dissolution of Yugoslavia and obstructed efforts by Milosevic and other Yugoslav leaders to keep their country together.
The press and NATO propagandists painted a very distorted picture of who was responsible for the conflict in what was known as the former Yugoslavia. They accused the Serbs of being expansionists, ethnic cleansing neo Nazis but the rump Yugoslavia, including Serbia were the most ethnically diverse areas in the former Yugoslavia. Milosevic was a democratically elected president not a dictator and the Croatian government was dominated by people who admired the World War II Ustase regime, who were allies with Nazi Germany and killed over a hundred thousand Jews, Serbs and Roma.
The Western interventions in the former Yugoslavia, were not about preventing ethnic cleansing or keeping the peace, they were about preserving NATO by giving it a new mission of humanitarian intervention and increasing the influence of the EU in the area. Their was a double standard on ethnic cleansing and war crimes. Serbs were nearly always blamed for massacres and ethnic cleansing of Croats and Bosniaks, but war crimes by Croats and Bosnian Muslims and the ethnic cleansing of Serbs were ignored. The Kosovo Liberation Army were touted in the media as freedom fighters, when in fact they were gangsters and terrorists.
The breakup of Yugoslavia, greatly lowered the living standards in the former Yugoslav Republics and ended the relative peaceful of existence of difference ethnic groups, that existed during the Yugoslav era. Many Muslim Jihadists got military training in Bosnia and later joined Al Qaeda. The Serbs had to surrender to the U.S. and NATO but retained their pride and got some concessions despite threats of destruction by NATO airpower.

The truth does not fit the "acceptable" narrative, so it has been rewritten by the media (among others) to present a skewed and completely false version of the Yugoslavian conflict. George Szamuely, in this meticulously researched and documented account, exposes the lies and half-truths that have informed the public perception of these events and presents the unadulterated and incontrovertible facts of this sorry sequence of events. The ripples of this destabilization continue to be felt even today, as we witness a continuation of this conflict on other fronts. The MO of the Islamic State remains the same. One can read today's headlines and make the connection: "That is exactly what they did in Yugoslavia." The complicity of NATO and its allies can not be denied. This history is being repeated because nobody will admit what actually happened. Szamuely's book is a wake-up call with profound implications for current world politics.

Comprehensive and invaluable. Along with Diana Johnstone's book this is the best and most important book on this subject and a corrective to the propaganda spewed out on same topic.

I am so very interested to read this book but I am absolutely astonished at the price. I would love to suggest it to my book club but sadly it is far too expensive. What is the reason for this?

This book is really indispensible. It's very thorough but written in a style that allows the absorption of immense detail and complexity of narrative. Just superb, the best book available on this history.
