Bombshell is the musical within NBC's Golden Globe-nominated series television hit "SMASH." The album contains 22 original songs that make up the Broadway-caliber cast recording of the musical, complete with liner notes detailing the plot of Bombshell. The songs on the Bombshell soundtrack span both seasons of "SMASH."

The soundtrack features stars Katherine McPhee (Karen), Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn), and other cast members performing the original music created for the show's musical-within-a-musical by Tony and Grammy award-winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Near the end of the first season of Smash, I was excited to hear that a CD soundtrack was coming out, only to be completely disappointed to find out that it was mostly cover versions by the show's cast, with very few of the songs from the musical within the show, "Bombshell." Happily, this has now been rectified, and we finally have the full, 22 song soundtrack for that (still) imaginary musical.

As the composers explain on the liner notes, they faced an interesting challenge in creating the music. Each number had to fit within the structure of a musical about Marilyn Monroe, but also had to comment on the character struggles and plot machinations of the TV show. Upon original hearing within the show, the songwriters succeeded admirably at the latter task. Finally hearing all the songs together in show order, I'm happy to report that they succeeded at the former as well. Divorced from the immediacy of the series, the songs work on their own.

Every last song is a stand-out, which makes "Bombshell" one of those collections you can listen to over and over without it getting old, and repeated listening reveals an intricacy and nuance to the lyrics that may not have been readily apparent during a single hearing on TV. For example, "Don't Say Yes Until I Finish Talking" starts out with the metaphor of "tomato" as 50s slang for a beautiful woman, then builds on it in multiple contexts. In the original series, the number was fun but almost a throwaway. Presented on its own here, it's a stand-out among standouts.

Speaking of stand-outs, Christian Borle, who plays the rarely singing composer Tom Levitt on the show, is featured in several songs here, particularly "Don't Say Yes", and this is a revelation all its own.

The two songs, "Second Hand White Baby Grand" and "They Just Keep Moving The Line" sung by the great and uncomparable Megan Hilty is worth the price of this CD alone. I just keep listening to the entire production over and over. It just gets better and better with each listen. Now, we just need to see this production brought to life in all its splendour! As US Weekley states, "deserving a standing O".

Releasing this cd was a brilliant idea. I am a huge fan of SMASH and the first season was all about the trials and tribultations involved in the making of the Broadway bound musical BOMBSHELL about Marilyn Monroe. The season was filled with superb musical performances and amazing production numbers. SMASH was not put together as a series without detailed thought. The numbers that were performed throughout the whole season indeed build an entire collection of songs that become the cast recording of the show BOMBSHELL itself. The season ended with its out of town premiere in Boston and this soundtrack brings the entire show into perspective. And for true fans of this part of the show BOMBSHELL makes an amazing musical. The numbers are creative, lively, spirited, emotional and newer and fresher than most Broadway has seen of late.

SMASH season one followed the rivalry between Katharine McPhee (Karen) and Megan Hilty(Ivy) for the lead of Marilyn. They were very different but each had their unique talents and qualities. There were many followers behind each and what I found most brilliant about this BOMBSHELL soundtrack is that it allows both women to perform the Marilyn numbers. And both shine. I myself was more a Katharine fan but listening to this Megan has more than grown on me. Katharine shines on the intimate heartfelt ballads like NEVER GIVE ALL YOUR HEART and the closing ballad DON'T FORGET ME. Her take on the production number THE 20TH CENTURY FOX MAMBO is magical. Megan is a powerhouse and owns the true big numbers like THE NATIONAL PASTIME and I NEVER MET A WOLF WHO DIDN'T LOVE TO HOWL. She also has the amazing belter THEY JUST KEEP MOVING THE LINE. And not surprisingly two of the best numbers here are duets with the two women.

Fantastic show. I bought my first Broadway cast album in 1959 with my own money (I was 10) - Gypsy. Since then I've accumulated nearly a thousand cast recordings , (including a bootlegged stagehand tape of 1983's Marilyn: An American Fable, the only attempt at a Monroe musical to open on Broadway so far) which may not make me a music critic, but I've been listening to show music for a long time and know what I am talking about. With some of the best theatrical music composers now sitting it out, we can only say Thank God for Marc Shaiman, Unbelievable to find the great forgotten pulse-pounding excitement of the showtune thriving in one so young. He is the great hope for those of us who still crave a showtune that knocks us over. But as if his superb pastiche of the greatest styles in Broadway history was not enough, this CD contains two performances that I find completely stunning, and deserving or a place on the top shelf of that massive collection, right up there with the best of the best. Megan Hilty's tour de force on They Just Keep Moving The Line, is, to use the words of a later generation, awesome. By that I mean jaw-dropping, wide-eyed awe-inspiring. It takes my breath away. On Don't Forget Me, Katharine McPhee (who would have thought!) gives the performance we all had sort of hoped she had in her since her Idol days, the performance of a lifetime, indeed, of anyone's lifetime. Far superior to anything else she has ever done, it takes her in one giant leap to a entirely different status and level of performance - her real career just got started. Kudos to both of these ladies for double-handedly reviving the great spirit of the Broadway Leading Lady who can belt-voice you into a coma.Read more ›
