Complete Studio Record Performed Live

In 2007 Bon Jovi released Lost Highway. The album was about as close as the band got to a concept album in its 25 year recording history. Its country inspired tracks went straight to number one in many countries in the world. As a result of this the A&E network proposed a concert to celebrate the record. Filmed in a small Chicago studio the band plays the record in track by track order. The band seems to be enjoying the material and the crowd does as well. There are standout performances of Lost Highway, (You Want To) Make a Memory, We Got it Going On, and I Love This Town before the band plays a three song encore of It's My Life, Wanted Dead or Alive, and Who Says You Can't Go Home.

While this is not the concert that many fans had hoped for its a good edition to any collection and shows how an arena band can continue to grow and create after so many years. The most important special feature are brief backstage interview segments with the band.

This is a fantastic DVD! Well produced: crystal clear video and great surround sound 5.1! The band looks great. The thing that strikes me most is how much the emphasis of Bon Jovi is on the musical performance, not just the spectacle. Of course this venue differs very much from their well-known arena/stadium shows -- it's a very much more intimate setting and a much smaller audience. But I think, Jon Bon Jovi once very accurately said that it doesn't really matter whether the band performs for 50 or 50,000, they always give 200% in performance quality. It just really comes through on this DVD. The lyrics are beautiful and written by true poets. I think I read in another review that these guys have "more talent in their pinkies" than most of the sum total of the rest of us. So true! I highly recommend this to anybody still resisting the enchantment of this band!

¿Tan bueno es el disco de Bon Jovi "Lost Highway", como para que merezca ser tocado en forma íntegra en un concierto? Honestamente, yo pienso que no, pero la banda piensa todo lo contrario, basados en el éxito de ventas que tuvo la placa que fue número 1 en varios países.

Mirando bajo el agua, no hay que ser adivino para darse cuenta que "Lost Highway" es netamente un disco de country-rock y que es la perfecta continuación de ese discazo que fue "Blaze of Glory" (1990), de Jon Bon Jovi, en el cual hizo se debut como solista. Pues bien, "Lost Highway" debería haber sido un disco solista de Jon y bajo ese parámetro todos hubiéramos dicho "que buen disco se mandó Jon", pero para el contexto de Bon Jovi, la banda, la repercusión y calidad del material no alcanza.

Pero lo anterior no impide que el grupo realice un concierto muy íntimo, en un teatro pequeño, para un puñado de cientos de fans (donde igual que en los 80's, las primeras filas están llenas de bellas fanáticas de la banda), en un lugar ambientado como si fuera el interior de un bar de una carretera perdida, que no conduce a ninguna parte. Entonces el grupo arranca el show interpretando todas las canciones de "Lost Highway" en el mismo orden del disco. El baterista Tico Torres tiene un kit de doble bombo sobre el escenario, pero aún así se ve contenido. Richie Sambora se ve demacrado y más grueso, parece que sus problemas de alcoholismo y el haberse metido con la mejor amiga de su ex mujer, le pasaron la cuenta. Además por primera vez en su historia, el grupo cuenta con un segundo guitarrista de apoyo, a quien las cámaras nunca enfocan, pero que está ahí sobre el escenario sosteniendo el sonido. También acompaña a la banda en todas las canciones, una bella violinista de origen oriental, con David Bryan como siempre en los teclados y Hugh MacDonald en el bajo. Al frente de todos ellos esta Jon, con su misma pinta de niño bueno de siempre, pero que también ya se le están comenzando a notar lo años.

Este show es un especial que la banda hizo para la cadena de televisión A&E Mundo, y tiene un formato casi calcado al del programa "Storyteller" de VH1, es decir, antes de tocar cada canción, Jon va relatando una historia sobre ella, cómo la compusieron, en qué se inspiro para crear la letra, dónde la grabaron, etc. Y Jon narra unas historias realmente muy interesantes, pero el problema es que la parte del concierto no cuenta con subtítulos, ya que en los extras aparecen entrevistas con todo la banda y ahí si están los subtítulos, asi que los que no se manejen bien con el inglés se perderán la sustancia de las historias que cuenta Jon Bon Jovi, algunas bastante divertidas.

El grupo toca y todo suena muy bien, sobre todo la voz de Jon, y la gente disfruta y lo pasa bien, sobre todo en los temas más rockeros del disco como `We got it going on' o `I love this town', pero cuando en los bises la banda descarga clásicos como `It's my life' (afinada una octava más abajo para que Jon no tenga problemas con su voz en las notas altas), y `Wanted dead or alive' realmente el teatro se viene abajo, es la locura total y finalmente Tico Torres y Sambora se sueltan el cinturón y rockean como en los viejos tiempos. Y uno ve este final tan apoteósico y de inmediato surge el cuestionamiento del por qué la banda no vuelve a sus raíces, a su sonido más glorioso de discos imprescindibles como "Slippery when wet" ('86) y "New Jersey" ('88).

Lamentablemente, la respuesta la da el propio Tico Torres en la sección de entrevistas, en una parte dice: "de pronto llegó el momento de madurar, de cortarnos el pelo y dejar atrás la ropa y la música que hacíamos en los 80's, eso estuvo bien por un rato, era lo que había que hacer en ese momento, pero luego avanzamos y ahora estamos en otra etapa, haciendo la música que realmente queremos tocar"... no sé si a ustedes les da la misma sensación, pero yo veo aquí a un tipo avergonzado por su pasado... ¿o me equivoco? ¿por qué debería de estarlo, si la música que hicieron en los 80's fueron canciones honestas que tocaron el corazón de millones de personas en todo el mundo? ¿cómo puedes renegar de los clásicos que hiciste? Creo que la respuesta, o el origen de todo esto, es que el gran éxito de la banda es el peor enemigo de Bon Jovi como grupo. Claro, el grupo saca un disco, llega al Nº1 en varios países, hacen giras por estadios, entonces Jon está convencido que cualquier cosa que hagan será un éxito, cuando realmente lo que todo el mundo quiere es un álbum de vuelta a las raíces, un "Slippery when wet" del siglo XXI.

Pese a todo lo anterior, este DVD proporciona grandes momentos de buena música, realmente se disfruta y se transforma en una pequeña joyita dentro del catálogo de la banda, pero al mismo tiempo, también sirve para enceder la hoguera de la nostalgia de inolvidables tiempos pasados.

I'm a massive fan of the Lost Highway record. If you didn't like the record due to its different flavor, you won't like the concert. I personally love it. Great performance (of course) of great songs. Nothing groundbreaking, and as prolific as this band has been recently, it may not wow you. But I'm glad to have it in my collection. If you're a fan, highly recommended. If you only like the 80's Bon Jovi, you probably won't like it much.

I bought this for my wife who is a die-hard Bon Jovi junkie. Let me just say if you are looking for a "concert". This isn't the video for you.

This is Bon Jovi playing the entire new album "lost highway" in front of an audience.

Now don't get me wrong it is still an excellent performance, but if you are looking for the music he plays LIVE all the time, this isn't the DVD for you (there are many others like that).

They sound good, and according to my wife he looks good. So Pick this DVD up if you LOVE the new album and want to hear it performed live.

A number of people criticize this album and I feel it is unjust; these guys always dare to be different and that is why they are still around and still current. I guess some people don't like change, don't like different. Me? I love it and having had the album a while and then recently bought this it really helps to bring the album more to life and give a better understanding of where they were going with it and of each and every song. This will definitely be one for numerous repeat viewings.
