How is this unit different from my previous 4 frothers:
* This unit uses 4 replaceable batteries and not two making it much more powerful.
* This device is solid in your hand. It feels like stainless steel.
* The battery compartment screws apart and has a silicone gasket seal.
* The central whip of this frother is about twice the thickness of my other units and uses a sturdy disc and not a coil. The thick central wire should help avoid the eventual bending of the thin wire alternatives. A straight central wire is essential for efficient whipping.
Frothing milk is a bit of an art. Skim milk works better than whole milk when frothing but this unit will certainly do both. As with all such devices, you need to work the very end up and down to allow air to be infused into the milk. I find I need to hold it at an angle and allow the disc to become barely visible to have it catch the air and properly mix it down.
My only negative comment so far with this device is the design of the push button switch. I have to hold my thumb on the switch and my wrist is then at a difficult angle when working at counter height. My previous BonJour rechargeable unit had a button switch at the very top of the handle that could be activated by the palm of my hand. Perhaps I can find a different way to hold the unit.
All in all this seems to be the best built unit I have found. Power is the name of the game when it comes to frothing and this unit seems to have plenty. The disc versus the coil will be easier to clean but is perhaps not as efficient at getting air infused into the milk. The disc does do the job however so I can't complain.
A word of warning here is that the battery compartment requires two batteries (that are side by side) to be up and two on the other side are face down. The plus and minus symbols on the white labels are hard to see. I plan to use a felt tip marker to make them more visible. When you screw the handle back together there are two black triangles that need to be aligned before you start. After the triangles are aligned it just requires a slight twist to lock.
I'm sorry to write this review. One star is only because the "frother" on the end of my unit broke off on only the second use. I was adding a powdered substance to water so it wasn't very thick. I ordered the BonJour mini mixer/milk frother because my previous BonJour unit had lasted 10 years. I searched out the BonJour brand since most mini mixers like this only have two AA batteries. I wanted one with more power having 4 AA batteries and was so shocked that the end broke off so quickly and easily this morning. My husband might be able to put it back on for me (he's a great fix-it guy) but why should he have to do that since I just received it?
When this unit works it's great and, as I said, my previous BonJour unit similar to this lasted 10 years. I had hoped for the same quality with the second unit. It may be that the end piece was somehow not attached well at the factory and I got a "lemon". Hopefully, my faith in this brand will be restored as I will soon contact Amazon to see what can be done to make this right.
*** EDIT: It looks like the manufacturer does not replace defective units so I will have to send this back to Amazon (since they ship it) for a refund. I hate to since I like this and it's so stylish. I'll order another one and hope it will last longer than this one did. I'm pretty bummed that this one didn't work out.
This BonJour Café Latte is everything I was looking for and more and it's well made. It sits securely in the stand and feels good in my hand. You will need to hold the power button down to keep it going and just release it to stop. It whips and blends nicely - very smooth and creamy results. It does not provide as much froth as say the SlickFroth because they have different shaped ends. The BonJour has a flat disc which is fantastic for blending and will definitely provide some froth but not super foamy. This can be quite nice if you are a latte drinker vs a Cappucino one. On the other hand, the SlickFroth has a coiled whisk type end which brings more air into the mix and creates a lot of foamy froth very quickly which is also good. It really depends what you are wanting.
Obviously you do have control over how you finesse each one so you don't have to go frothy crazy with the SlickFroth but it will get you there whereas the BonJour will not. But the BonJour will give you a smoother frothy finish and can tackle something a little heavier like yogurt for a smoothie and it whips cream in about 45 seconds. The 4AA's vs the 2AA's does make a difference. Remember though, neither are blenders with a lot of power. I use both all the time for different things.. If I was forced to choose it would be the BonJour Café Latte because of personal preference but if you are primarily into foamy froth the SlickFroth will give you that consistently but if you require more versatility and power this BonJour is for you! Really, you should get both :-). I believe they are the best in each category. Hope this helps.
