Format: Paperback
St Bonaventure was one of the most brilliant medieval thinkers in Christendom. Deeply influenced by Francis of Assisi, St Augustine, and Pseudo-Dionysius, Bonaventure wrote several works on philosophy, theology, and on mystical contemplation.

This book introduces several aspects of Bonaventure's philosophy, including his creative use of St Augustine and Aristotle's philosophy combined with the ideas of mystical contemplation deriving from Dionysius and Hugh of St Victor, as well as his interesting works on theological topics. Perhaps the most interesting and beautiful of Bonaventure's ideas is the contemplator ascending to God via his uncreated attribute of wisdom, as shown in Christ, the exemplar of all things, and also in the human soul and the created universe.

This book offers a useful introduction and will be useful to any student of medieval philosophy.

The content of the book is excellent. Professor Cullen presents a great contemporary presentation of St. Bonaventure. I particularly like his able defense against Van Steenbergen to the effect that Bonaventure had a systematic philosophical point of view.

The one star is the con of either Amazon or Oxford selling a paperback glued to a hardback cover for an extra $40. The hardback is not hardback. It is a paperback glued into a hard cover. I buy hardcovers to last. This "hardcover" is a way over-priced paperback.

Either Amazon (quietly doing books on demand printing?) or OUP will be hearing from me about the hardback that isn't.
