Defective BUT you can fix it

Worked once, then as others have reported, light won't turn on and it stopped working.

However, I was able to fix it by following advice from other reviewers. Unscrew 3 screws from bottom of kettle. You will see several wires. There is a small white post that is hard to see at first, as it is below some of the wiring. If you gently press on it, it will click. Then the kettle worked again.

However, given this problem, I wouldn't buy it again. But if you already own it, know that you can fix it (I have no special electrical skills!)

Great little kettle that packs a punch

I bought this for home use as well as travel. The size is perfect for brewing a quick aeropress cup in the morning, or afternoon, without needing to heat up an entire kettle.

It is large enough that I can fill the aeropress completely using the inverted method, and the plunger below the four. It also leaves additional water to pre-rinse the paper filter, as well as pour some into the brewing mug to pre heat it. It also has enough capacity that I can bypass brew, and make a faux americano by adding additional water to the aeropress brew.

It is the perfect size for travelling, this thing is tiny, but it packs a punch. When I fill it just above the fill line, it reaches a rolling boil in about two minutes, barely enough time for me to use my hand grinder on 30 grams of beans.

The cord has an attached Velcro strap for easy storage.

I would recommend not filling much past the max fill line, because when it reaches a rip rolling boiling, it could spill over the sides.

The base and handle do not get hot, which is perfect for a hotel or the office.

I use it with the lid off, only so I can monitor the boil more closely. I also leave just a little bit of water in the kettle when pouring, so it is not bare metal hot, I think this is probably what another reviewer did when they had the discoloration, leave a little bit of water in the bottom, as a heat sink, until it cools off, and you should not experience any discoloration.

Just received this and gave it a test run. It boils water very quickly! I bought it to take along on motorcycle tours so I can brew my own coffee (using a separate small, steel Bodum French Press along with this water boiler). It remains to be seen if it stands up to the vibration on a motorcycle, but if not, I certainly won't blame that on the electric kettle. It's pretty small, and about the size of an oversize travel mug. I'll stuff a baggie of freshly ground coffee in it for storage on the trip. Should keep me happy and awake. :) Thanks to Bonavita for making this out of steel rather than plastic on the inside. I would never, ever want to boil water for consumption in plastic, regardless of whether it's BPA-free or not. I have a sensitive nose, and did not detect any plastic smell coming from the cap, as others stated that they noticed. Also, the water does not touch the plastic lid during boiling. The max fill indicator is well below the level of the cap. This kettle shuts itself off as soon as the water boils, in order to prevent the kettle from cooking itself dry. So that way, we don't get all cranky from burning down the hotel room or ruining our precious kettle.

The heating element boils the water fast, but terrible design on the lid. It's hard to take off and if you're not careful you can end up burning your knuckles with the steam due to the hand position required to pull off the top. I often need to take off the top to use my Thermopen because I am very serious about making my pour-over coffee with just the right temperature. I would've paid another $10-15 if it had an accurate temperature gauge on it. Don't touch this thing anywhere near the metal. It will burn your fingers.

Update: This kettle's heating element burned out after a year of moderate use and the kettle is no longer functional. Garbage.

The inside finish is coming off and I've used this very little. I use it one weekend/month and that started September of 2017. By December the interior finish was beginning to erode. Not happy about that. Works great but I will not keep using with the finish coming off. Therefore not worth the money.

I've just had to replace this unit because it finally stopped working following three year's of daily faithful service. Until now, this kettle proved itself great value for money and perfect for quickly making one or two cups of hot tea. Being a smaller capacity means it has a compact footprint and boils water in just a couple of minutes. Stainless steel is also easy to clean and CLR takes care of limescale build up. I chose to replace it with a 0.5L Proctor Silex brand kettle that is comparable in most ways, but cost slightly less, stands about an inch taller, and has a cordless base. Here's hoping it lasts as long as its predecessor, this awesome little Bonivita brand kettle!

EXACTLY what I was looking for! I prefer not to heat my water in plastic so when I'm at work I use this to make a cup of tea throughout the day to keep me warm. Wanted something completely stainless steel interior and found this on one of Food Babe's blog posts. Yes, it only heats enough for one good sized mug portion BUT it boils so quickly that it's not an issue. Mine takes about 2 minutes! Never more than 3. Really easy to use, feels durable enough for it's use with normal wear and doesn't leave any funny taste in the water. I had tried a different brand of a completely stainless steel electric kettle and it smelled funny and left a gross taste in the water. Not to mention it had too many parts for its purpose. This one? Just 2. The kettle and the lid, that's it. Have also taken it traveling and it's so nice to have it with me in hotels or where there's no stovetop!

Chemical smell that won't go away....

When the kettle arrived, it had a very noxious chemical odour emitting from it. At first I thought it was the plastic, maybe the lid, but it actually seems to be coming from the steel. When I boil water in the kettle without the lid on, I can actually smell the chemical smell coming out. I'm pretty sure if I drank any water from this thing, it would poison me. I'm trying various methods to clean the kettle and remove the smell (soap, vinegar, baking soda, etc) and nothing is working. If it doesn't go away soon, I will return it. Like most things, this kettle is made in China under dubious safety and environmental standards. Who knows what kind of toxic chemicals it has been laced with...

Boiler alert!

Great kettle. I was looking for a compact travel kettle while away from home. I also wanted a steel one. This has a maximum fill of 500ml (fill line is about midway up). The entire boiling compartment is steel. the only plastic is the lid which must be on for the auto shut off to work. It's simple and has been working great. Boils 500ml in a few minutes. Has a little light to show when it's on. The lid comes right off and has no hinge or attachment.

There is some scaling at the bottom as others have noted that has occurred after 10 or so uses (if that's what it is. just some very faint white staining in the bottom where the element heats through, see photo). The instructions note that this will happen from the water and instruct how to clean it when desired. Not an issue for me.

The company did make another model that had a switch for NA/Europe power voltage and with a removable cord that I wanted, but it was lower power and is now discontinued. The cord on this one is only about 2 feet and light so not an issue compared to the weight of the kettle. I just hang the cord off the side of the desk i use after pouring.

The build quality is great (although the metal portion is slightly tilted on top of the plastic base on mine, hardly noticeable). So far no issues, works the same every time over last few weeks (about 12 times).

Simple, steel, light weight and compact. You could even boil something in it if you chose to...(eggs?).

Only thing not as good as others is you have to unplug it to carry it further than a couple feet...but it is a good safety measure.

Love it. Haven't seen one better. Definitely recommend.

My fav part is most kettles cover was attached to the kattle and this one can be takend off --- convenient to fill in water and clean inside. Although it is a travel kettle, I actually use this all the time at home as it is quite adequate for 2 people.
This is my second one as my first finally gave out on me BUT it did last 5yrs with continuous use as with being British I am an avid tea drinker!..mmm continued 5mnths later!....as you can see I bought this in march of this year and it has now stopped working , cannot believe it only lasted this short time so NO, don't waste your money on this CHEAP IMITATION which obviously came from china... now I will try to find one that is made in canada!
