From the Manufacturer
The error message indicates that the kettle reached the boiling point before reaching the set temperature. This is common in higher elevations, but should not occur in other environments. Please note that this "Hi-Err" issue has only surfaced in a small number of bases from a limited date code range. The date codes can be found on the bottom of the kettle base. The specific date codes that could potentially show signs of this error are 1425, 1427, and 1429. We have replacement electrical bases available that have been confirmed to not produce this error message. Customers experiencing this issue should be directed to complete the warranty claim form at the link below or call 855.664.1252 to receive a replacement electrical base shipped to them.

Sept 2014 Update on the Bonavita-- I got a nifty bottle brush but rarely need it any more. I've found if I let it cool down and empty the water before replacing it on the burner there is almost no scaling. It heats up really fast. And is gorgeous on my counter. The only downside I can find now is the impulse to grab it by the fragile spout instead of the sturdy handle. That would probably damage this pot. It holds enough water to fill my french press coffee maker with a bit left over to heat a cup, or I let it cool and water my plants since it has heated the water enough to get rid of the chlorine in the tap water. My plants are thriving. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a great looking kettle. It is a bit pricy but it is also beautiful and functional. It deserves a update from 3 stars to 5
April 2015 It has been a year now and I am still delighted with my kettle. No more scaling or pitting. You don't need the water hot enough to boil. 196 is perfect for coffee and tea. Setting the pot aside to cool before putting back on the stand seems to have cured the problem with the scaling. The spout is still fragile so care must be taken not to use it for lifting filling etc. I treat it like it is glass. I can see getting many years wear out of this. Glad I purchased it when I did The price has gone up considerably, but worth the extra $ Mine still looks as good as the day I opened the package.
The ergonomics and pour control are flawless.
I did not experience any of the rust issues that others have.
It comes up to temperature quickly and holds temperature effectively.
The [Temp Set] and [+] keys are both malfunctional. This is strange because though I use the kettle every day, I've rarely pressed those keys (ie: they are not worn out). I can get the [Set Temp] key to work by pressing (very) firmly, but the [+] key is dead. The upside is that I never adjust my brewing temperature for making coffee, so the kettle is still effectively functional. The downside is that I can't experiment with different brewing temperatures if I were to get inspired to do so.
In conclusion, I give it 5 stars for how I loved it while it was new and because I can still use it, and 1 star for my recent dismay at it's malfunctioning. Average is 2.5, and I'll round down for good measure.
Within a few days of receiving the product, I was getting the "Hi Err" message. I looked at Bonavita's website and they have a very easy warranty process for this particular error, and within a few days they shipped me a new base that has since corrected the error.
Just after the 30 day mark, I noticed a bit of rust beginning to form on the lid and where the lid meets the kettle. I am very careful about drying out the kettle after each use, emptying it of water and carefully sitting it upside down so the water rolls out of the kettle as it dries. I know that Bonavita has said that their kettles do not rust, but I don't know what else to call the rust that is appearing.
I will continue to use the product for the time being but am wondering if the rust issue will slowly take over the kettle. I'm not sure I would pay full price for this product until there is clear communication from Bonavita about the rust issue
