I had been looking for a reclining office chair for awhile, and the problem I kept running into with chairs in my price range was complaints about the footrests not extending far enough to support the lower legs and feet. What sold me on this chair was the extendable footrest. As you can see in the photos, when you are not using it, it is tucked up under the seat. With similar chairs the footrest flips out like a typical reclining chair, but this one slides out on two extension poles, which allows for a longer reach. I'm 5'6" and when fully extended it rests right under my ankles. Not quite to the bottom of my feet, but good enough for me, and better than other brands where many have reported that the footrests don't extend below mid-calf. I think not having your shoes on it is a good idea anyway because there should be less wear and tear on the footrest cover (which may be replaceable because it has a zipper around it, but I'm not sure due to the way the footrest connects to the frame). If you are a very tall person it might not work for you, but my 5'10" husband finds it comfortable as well. Another plus is that the footrest can be extended while you are sitting in the chair, unlike some others that you have to get up out of to do it.
The footrest is the biggest pro and what makes it worth the price to me, but as office chairs go it's also sturdy and comfortable in both sitting and reclining positions. You can't tip it over without jumping on it. I didn't put it together myself but my husband reports that assembly was straightforward and not difficult. The lumbar support is soft and well curved for our backs without feeling like something is sticking into you like some chairs. The seat and the headrest are well padded, and although I don't plan to use it to actually nap in, it is comfy enough to do so.
Just a few minor cons:
The curved arms are in a fixed position and not manually adjustable, but are hinged so they adjust automatically when you recline the chair. They are comfortable and fine for sitting and reclining, but not so great for supporting your arms while typing on a keyboard unless it is very close in front of you and at a lower height than most desks. Mine is 29.5" and even with the chair at its highest height the keyboard would need to be lower to be comfortable. I will have to get a sliding keyboard tray that attaches underneath the desk to avoid straining my arms and wrists, since I do a lot of typing. In light of everything I like about the chair, I don't mind making the adjustment, therefore this does not reduce my overall rating.
The lowest level of the seat is also a little high for my legs when I'm barefoot (perfect with a 1" heel). The photo with the measurements shows 18.5" to the bottom of the seat, but it's actually to the top of the seat. Otherwise it would have been way too high for anyone without very long legs. (Edited to add: looks like they updated the photo; seat height measurement range now correct.)
I initially had some concerns about the fact that no warranty information was included in the box, but I contacted Viva's service department and they got back to me within several hours. They do provide free parts exchange for two years. Although the response time was excellent, they could have saved the time if that information was in the pamphlet that comes with the chair.
Not a con for me, but it may be for some people: the chair doesn't rock back. You have to use the lever to recline it and lock it in place in every position. But there are no preset positions, you can lock it at any point you want.
The free blanket and pillow that are currently advertised as coming with it are a nice touch, but the folded up blanket is stuffed inside the zippered pillow cover to form the pillow, so if you want to use them at the same time you will have to buy a stuffer pillow for the case. Not a con, but something people might like to know. Very soft and cozy.
This got long, but I wanted to cover all of the info I wished had been available to me before I took the gamble on this purchase. I would be happy to answer any questions in the comments as well. I do suggest checking out Viva's website for more specs and photos, as well as an installation guide, and they also have a YouTube video that shows exactly how the chair works. I'll link to that in the comments since I don't think links are allowed in reviews.
Bottom Line; THIS CHAIR is just as good as any "zero-gravity" chair (even better) due to its ability to fully lay back. ~ The foot rest extension is much more comfortable, as it is nicely padded compared to us 6' folks having to rest our feet on the cold metal frame of the conventional zero-gravity chair, which can get very uncomfortable after a short while. ~ The back is adjustable to your preferred recline position which makes it just perfect for TV viewing.
ONE GREAT PLUS for us old-timers, is the EASE of getting-up out of this chair compared to the popular zero-gravity chairs on the market which are lower to the floor and virtually a 'pain' to get out of without something solid nearby to grab hold of, which in my case is a very heavy stationary bike!
This fine chair was engineered and developed by the Japanese for office workers to be able to refresh themselves with a quick nap during their work day which made them more productive. ~ Go to VivaOffice.com website and view their video on this model chair.
NOTE; the instruction booklet is in pictorial form, thus look very closely at each photo-step for proper assembly, the ONLY screws you should have left over are the 'spare screws' provided. ~ NO TOOLS needed for assembly as the proper Allen wrenches are provided, but if you are not a husky person you should have assistance available during assembly! ~ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED chair that is a 'one of its kind'!!!
UPDATE; Feb 25, 2015 ~ The only problem that I have encountered is that my legs slowly slide off the leg rest unless you are in full recline position, which can be a real nuisance. ALSO if you are in a partial recline there is a tendency for you to slowly slip forward due to the slickness of the bonded leather. ~ This could easily be corrected by offering this same chair upholstered in a durable FABRIC, which would also make the chair cooler & more breathable than what it currently is. ~ I would buy another IF ever made available in FABRIC!
