Not "Professional" Spot Putty

This is a TWO part compound, and is not clearly labeled / pictures.

Professional grade spot putty is pre mixed, and that is required for a uniform finish when doing multiple layers

This compound dries poorly, abet quickly and does not adhear to surfaces as well as true pro grade.

It dries to a soft sandy mix that will come off in clumps if sanded.

Best approach is to run a wet microfiber cloth about 5 minutes in and the moisture will shape it. Do not sand afterwards.

Otherwise, get a real professional spot putty

Great alternative to wood fill but the tube is an issue

A contractor told me about Bondo Brand Glazingspot putty as an easier way to repair risers on my staircase. There is ample time to cover all of the staple, nail & dings smoothly for paint before the putty sets. There is exponentially less dust created when I sanded the risers for painting. Plus it is so a lot easier to sand than regular wood fill. The only issue with the product is the tube itself. I was very careful to gently push the putty from the bottom of the tube onto the putty knife. However mid-way through the project, putty started randomly seeping out of multiple crevices all over the tube. Would be nice if this product were available in a tub versus a tube.

After seeing our long time paint contractor use red filler on our trim with amazing results I found out he was using this car Bondo. Turns out this product is far superior to any wood filler I’ve ever used. Drys quick, rock solid at 24 hours and shapes well with fine sanding. You do need to prep the sanded surface with primer before painting but this is by far the best wood filler I have ever used on painted wood and MDF trim, whether or not it’s marketed for it.

Softens and crinkles with alkyd paint

This is the one part version of Bondo's spot putty. The "professional" version is a two part putty (separate tube of hardener that is mixed into putty when applied). I thought I'd try this one part putty for ease of use. Good consistency, easy to spread and hardened in a reasonable time frame. Sanded smooth, but when I applied alkyd based primer, the areas crinkled and I ended up with a VERY rough surface. When I tried to sand it smooth, it was soft and smeared all over the rest of the painted areas. I tried this putty three different times with the same results each time; looked great until you tried to paint it. Talked to an automotive supply store and they said it sounds like the manufacturer did not mix enough hardener into the batch that I received. He said he has heard of this problem before with this product. I tried to return it (I had it for less than 30 days), but Amazon won't take it back (I think because it is considered a hazardous material). I emailed 3M (manufacturer) and heard nothing back. I'll stick with the two part "professional" version

Great Product; Arrived damaged but the company made it right

The filler itself works well, though the working time was less than the 5 minutes. It goes from gloppy to sort of a packed sand consistency quite fast. Suggest making a tiny trial batch, the size of a pea with a rice-grain dot of the hardener, to get a feel for it, before using a big amount.

The tube was leaking on arrival--disappointing because I'd bought this size figuring I could use it for lots of repairs over time, since it's a 2-step process, but clearly that wasn't going to be possible. I contacted the company, who offered a partial refund. I'd have been furious about that if I wasn't ready to go with the repair, because it would mean the whole tube was wasted through no fault of mine, with only a partial refund. HOWEVER, since my repair had been sanded & prepped, I was able to use it, about 80% of the tube, for 2 rounds of dent-filling, so it seemed honest to prorate the refund: a win/win. I'm happy with the company's response and won't hesitate to buy from them in the future.

I have ordered 2 of these within a month each time it went up in price about 2 dollars I went to reorder again and it was 2 dollars more so I bought locally cheeper. Also the 2 times I ordered one was really runny the second time it was a little thick so there is no concisely in the density .

Sets up too quickly for me

I've never seen anything set up this quickly.... Says 5 minutes in instructions; but that would be max from the second you add the hardener until the mix is solidified. Really not practical, IMHO. I had to make 4 batches and was only able to use very small dabs of each before they hardened. Also, instructions say to "knead the tubes" before use. No kneading can really mix the base adequately, as it's in a metallic tube. If it needs to be mixed before dispensing (and it does), it should be in a different container. As you can tell, I'll be looking for some other solution for my fine putty jobs. Not a fan of this stuff.

This stuff is really swell. Back in the old days I worked in a body shop and they use to get Nitro Stan spot putty for all the deep sanding marks. It was dark orange in color and smelled like banana. The downside was the drying time as it took a couple of hours.
This putty dries rock hard in 10 minutes, depending on how much hardener you use and it doesn't bleed through when you prime over it. What more can you ask for?
