My Wife has read all of the Lei Texa series and she loves them. This was my first experience and I'm going to have to start with book one. I read this one "by accident". I have gotten away from "Murder Mysteries" and focused on Sci-Fi with a few action Adventure over the past five years or so. I'm also a dedicated Fisherman and thought this was going to be an Action Afventue Fishing Story set in Maui Hawai. My Wife and I visited four of the Hawaiian Islands for our 25th Anniversary and went back to Maui (our favorite) for our 50th last June...stayed in the same room and had dinner at the same place as our 25th.
What a pleasure it was to read this book. I found myself back on Maui and could feel the Island, smell the air and hear the music. Toby Neil has a way of describing the island and various locations that bring them to life as clear as if you just visited there.
The story was outstanding and kept me guessing throughout the book. I dislike reviews that give away any part of the story so I won't be specific with any details. However, I will say I found myself feeling the same desire for one of the suspects to be the guilty one as Lei did. I totally agreed with how the team of detectives felt about the outcome.
The main story concludes but there is a sub-plot that is unresolved and leads directly into the next book. Some readers may have a problem with this but I've been a fan of Stephen King, Tom Clancy, James Michener and similar Story Tellers. If you're familiar with them, you'll know their works often approach or exceed 1,000 pages and often consist of on-going plots and characters. While I want to have a conclusion, I also want a good story to continue. I'm sure most who read Toby Neil's books will want to continue reading her stories so, her form of a cliff-hanger is fine with me. I think you'll find this OK also

I’ve liked this series from the very first book and this one did nothing to change that. One reason is Neal has made me care about the characters, cheer their successes, bemoan their failures.

Lei and Michael are at a rough place in their marriage and personal lives, Lei still mourning the loss of a child, Michael coping with PTSD. While Lei investigates the underwater murder of a marine biologist, Michael signs on with a private security service to train military police in a foreign country.

This book like earlier ones has a mix of Lei’s private and professional lives. Some of them leaned more toward one or the other but this one is about equally split between them.

Neal ends this book on an honest to God cliffhanger. I’m not a fan of them because done poorly, they either give too little away (The reader has to buy the next book to find out what did happen) or they give too much away, turning the cliffhanger into a mere porch hanger. Neal struck a good balance here, telling the reader enough to make him want to read the next book as soon as possible.

I had just read the previous book, and did not realize that 3 years had passed. it really upset me to see that Lei and her husband were still having troubles and that he was still drinking after going through all this with his own mother.
Then decides to go off on some secret mission and not even telling Lei where he was going. I was about to sit down and cry, and I thought she is going to kill him off, LOL especially when this one character she meets in the process of solving the Bone Hook Crime.

Oh my I was on pins and needles and I may have to even read it again to concentrate on the actual crime committed.. I spent more time worrying about Lei and her Husband.Arrrgh.

Well hopefully the next book won't take too long because now I worry about Him (Can't remember his name now) in South
America. Is Lei going to rescue him? Hope so... And make sure they get rid of the pert little sexy Sgt who runs his training office he is gone. Did not like her at all. But hey folks Toby is a great story teller and sure won't disappoint us. I have read this whole series so far and even a couple of the others off shoot this series by other authors. Once again the amazing work of crafting a Story and bringing it to life, Doing the research and making us eager to read it and make it come alive for it..These people ARE REAL to me.. If you read this, and the other reviews you will KNOW --GET THE BOOK and read the early ones too

I must confess, I am a HUGE fan of Toby Neal's "Lei Crime Series". I have read each book in the series, in order, and when I finish one, I can not wait to dive into the next! The recurring characters in this series are so well written that they become real. Each book is a different story entirely, some may reference people or cases from previous books, but Toby Neal ties it together so well that it is seamless. I have never read another mystery series, that has been so well crafted, that the ending is ALWAYS a surprise.

Toby Neal's incredible ability to make her readers feel as though they are actually IN Hawaii is beyond magical. She describes Hawaii in such amazing detail, that I feel as though I'm on a mystery Hawaiian vacation with each and every new “Lei Crime Series” adventure.

“Bone Hook”, book 10 in the series, was one that I could not put down! It kept me guessing to the very last page. This particular book in the Lei Crime series, ended differently than the others had… and it made me start reading book 11, “Red Rain”, as soon as I finished “Bone Hook”… and that happened to be at 2:00AM. ☺️

If you love mysteries, crime stories, and anything centered in a stunning local, I highly recommend the Toby Neal “Lei Crime Series”… I promise, it will NOT disappoint!

Lei is in the middle of a difficult case chasing the killer of a marine biologist and Stevens has gone on a highly secret private security contract for 6 months leaving her to manage her job and little Kiet with the help of their close family but it is putting a strain on their relationship. She is fully engaged in her work and fending off attention from would be suitors although she seems to be tempted. Pono is injured (it's just a flesh wound) because of their laxity leaving her with a new partner Bunuelo to carry on the chase for the murderer and Pono's shooter. Plenty of action and detective work and good characters to like and dislike plus the scenery sounds stunning as well.
