This posthumous collection of poems by Bukowski (Pulp, LJ 6/1/96) is a wonderful swan song. The settings remain mostly the same?taprooms, race tracks, and back alleys?and the themes largely unchanged?fragile relationships, heavy drinking, and the art of writing. However, one new theme that surfaces in this collection is the acceptance of death and old age. Bukowski knows he faces death and seeks "the grave to find a more/ comfortable/ position." He realizes that death will be his final act, and he will be "alone but not lonely." Accepting it, he writes with clarity and precision?"I will write the stuff only for myself/ and to myself"?and goes on to realize that in death he will "no longer defile these pages/ with my raw and simple/ lines." The only drawback of this work lies in a handful of weaker poems that show Bukowski attempting to be clever, and this is when he fails. Buk in his late phase, terse language usage and the minimalist style (as compared to earlier "lyrical" style). Life with his wife, cats, racetrack, BMW, computer; an "old fart" in a fancy LA home with pool and spa...Long time out of the Post Office; no longer a barfly but a wine-drinking restaurant-going man; smoker of ceegars, driver of freeways, maker of poems... "Our public hell creates a/private hell and/there is no hell/except on/earth./once you accept/this premise/you will be free to/exist/on your own terms/and you will never/know loneliness/and death will be as/nothing./consider yourself/blessed in the/dark."

Wrong product description. Not real Bukowski.

This book was not written by Bukowski. After doing some research I found many of his books put out after his death were re-edited by publishers and editors. Also Abel Debritto had nothing to do with this book.. although strangley he is listed in the product description.... not sure why. Do some research before purchasing his posthumous books. Here is a list of the books to avoid.

Pretty good collection but too long

One of the better posthumous Bukowski collections but much too long. If the volume was half the size a lot of the more forgettable poems could have been cut. A lot of poems about mortality and looking back to his early years. Most of the race track poems are quite weak and some of it seems like the musing of a middle class retiree who even though he knows he is lucky is still angry and put off mainly by other people. His wife says in one of the poems "we have no friends !" I'm not surprised. His best years were over as a writer but there were still some good poems among the mediocre. Why unpublished works of dubious value kept getting pumped out is anyone's guess. Of course the answer is the obvious one. Money.

Charles Bukowski, Bone Palace Ballet (Black Sparrow, 1997)

The main problem with the fact that Charles Bukowski has now published more work after his death than he did during the first sixty years of his life is that, well, not all of it is all that wonderful (and, really, the quality of the doorstops that were coming out in the seven or eight years before his death wasn't exactly stellar, either). This is not to say that some really, really good Buk books haven't come out posthumously-- The Captain Is Out to Lunch and the Sailors Have Taken Over the Ship quickly became one of my favorite Buk reads-- but Bone Palace Ballet is not one of them. It's a lot like those last few books published before his death in that there are a number of places where you can see why it is that Buk was able to become the sole American poet able to make a comfortable living solely off writing the stuff, the kind of talent that makes Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame or War All the Time a book that, when you're done with it, will stay with you for the rest of your life. But those times are few and far between (though to be fair, there's a lot more "few and far between" in a 363-page book, pretty much by definition, than there's going to be in one of the seventy-page wonders most poets turn out about twenty percent as frequently as Buk). Worth reading for established fans, but newbies will want to go father back in the canon for their first approach. ***

I wish I could rate this 4.5 stars. This book of poems was very very good. annotating these poems was very entertaining, they really make you think. My only criticism is that there was a almost rape poem and a couple of military ones. I just didn't like these ones, everything else was amazing.

Scraps left behind.

This book is only a shadow of what Bukowski can do. I was very dissapointed with his wife being so hell bent on releasing his unpublished work. These poems are all ones that he would have never released had he been alive. They have no charm and show nothing of his talent. His wife I guess thought they were good enough to be released. I beg to differ. If you want a good collection of his poems from the last years of his life check out Betting on the muse which is an amazing book.

you have to figure that there a wealth of stuff still out theer yet to be released. this book is proof of that
some good stuff here
its easy to decide that this is the stuff he chose not to release but i like to think he just hadnt gotten around to it yet

Bukowski in his last years. Rare to see a writer grapple with aging and death in such a matter of fact way. There are some true gems in this one. .... Bone Palace is a little repetitive, but you can't be shocked to find Bukowski holding forth on booze, women, horses, hypocrites, and writing. What else did he ever write about? And really, what more can you ask for?
