Review
Jean Rabe uses her mastery of flowing prose to immerse you in a world of archaeological intrigue. From the art world to the underworld, keep your mind sharp as the bread crumbs she leaves are there to find if you read with your eyes wide open. With an intrigue reminiscent of Michael Crichton, I expect you'll like this book as much as I did.

Jean Rabe has spun a special mix of modern people associated with an ancient archaeological dig site and an odd old religious belief in Rome. Her description of some of this wonderful city's more touristy sites such as the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain are good, but even better is her treatment of the the twisty and claustrophobic tunnels beneath Rome's streets where the dig site lies. Her main character is a woman who proves herself to be no shrinking violet when her purse is stolen: Irem Madigan runs down the thief and lays him out until the police come. The policeman who introduces himself to Irem at that time is also an important part of the plot. The story is twisted and surprising, and has an excellent ending. I'll read it again.

The city of Rome gives The Bone Shroud an intriguing setting and an irresistible hook. The protagonist, Irem Madigan, is a redoubtable archivist from Chicago’s Field Museum who thinks she’s in for a pleasant trip to Italy to attend her brother’s wedding. Things start going wrong almost immediately as she has her purse snatched by a thief, whom she manages to catch and knock out using her hapkido skills. Then she’s a bit concerned that her brother’s prospective spouse is not what she expected. In no time at all her best laid plans for a pleasant, memorable trip go totally awry and she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of trying to unravel an ancient mystery in the catacombs of the city, where she finds mistakes can be deadly. Rabe once again delivers a compelling story written in her customary highly entertaining and readable style. Her masterful use of point of view lets you walk in Irem’s shoes as she follows the deadly trail through the underside of the city of the seven hills. Rabe’s great at creating perfect settings, putting in just the right amount of detail to ground the reader in the scene without letting things get bogged down with superfluous description. Her ability to write crisp dialogue and excellent action scenes keeps the scenes moving in this fast paced tale of mystery and murder in the eternal city. From its engaging opening line to the felicitous ending sentence, this book will keep you turning the pages.

A good mystery keeps you guessing to the end. This one did! I’m reminded of a Franciscan Priest Fr. Chris. He was retired, in his 80s and filled in when our pastor was gone. He would start his homily (sermon) with an interesting story but before he was done he’d change directions to something different. Then he’d change again. I felt sorry for him because he surely must be having a senior moment, but then at the last minute he’d brilliantly bring it all together into an amazing conclusion. This story is like this with several mysteries going on and then brought together in a dramatic ending. I mentioned on Facebook I was halfway through and nobody died yet. Well Jean took care of that in a big way. I’m never going to get her mad at me!

The Bone Shroud by Jean Rabe is just the latest reason to love this prolific multi-genre author. The action starts on page one and never stops. The history-mystery takes place mainly in Rome, and Rabe’s eye for detail makes readers feel as if they were right there. But this is no travelogue, so don’t get comfy – Rabe keeps readers on the edge of their seats with as many twists and turns in this thriller as in the catacombs and archaeological digs in which much of the action takes place. The real bonus – at least for me – is Rabe’s characters – so realistic, so interesting, so flawed, so sinister, so beguiling. Fans of Jean’s earlier books, as well as fans of fast-paced mysteries and action-packed thrillers, will not want to miss this one!

I am a big fan of mystery and thriller novels set in Europe. So, I must express my thanks to author Jean Rabe for writing such a riveting story set in one of my favorite places: Italy.
Irem Madigan, an American museum archivist, makes a trip to Italy for her brother’s wedding to an archeologist who lures them into a centuries-old mystery. What should have been an alluring vacation for Irem turns sinister when she finds herself embroiled in a ruthless relic hunt while trying to unravel ancient secrets.
The author’s descriptive prose makes you feel part of the story, whether you are above or under the streets of Rome. So, don’t be surprised if you find yourself booking the next flight to Italy—and even if you’ve been there, there is a strong chance you’d be tempted to visit again.
Intrigue and suspense infused with an air of romance, The Bone Shroud is a must read.

The Bone Shroud is a masterfully well-done novel by Jean Rabe. Not only did it casually keep me on the edge of my seat for the entire ride, but the history that was spread perfectly throughout also kept me enthralled the entire time. The characters were phenomenal, and I felt Irem was really relatable.
When I finished this book, I looked over at my wife and told her that we need to go to Italy someday. Some of the cool stuff that was mentioned in the book would be awesome to see in real life.
A great read. My rating is 5/5
Hoping there is a book two, or maybe something else with Irem in it!

I loved the mix of location, old history and arcane facts. The characters sometimes got a little wordy sharing their knowledge though it was interesting to learn about. Irem could be fool-hardy going off to strange places on her own in a foreign country, but I enjoyed the journey. Great history, esp. the shroud, ending in a strange but all-too-scary twist. The best part was the hunky Italian officer and a charming ending that leaves you looking for more between him and Irem. An enjoyable read!

I wish I was a writer so that I could write something that would give this book the praise it deserves. Simply, I loved it, and I hope it will be the start of a series. I love the strong female character! I love the story and suspense, the mystery, the setting, the heartbreak, all of it. I want to meet the characters for real, and be right there with them! I want to go into the tunnels under Rome! Jean Rabe has triggered my true idea of fun; a quest, a search, a hunt for hidden treasure!
