Winter is having a bad run of luck. She's lost her job, so takes what appears to be an easy package delivery, that changes her world. Winter hasn't claimed her Bone Witch birthright, so she's an anomaly. Instead of using her magic, she relies on her physical strength, something that makes her an outsider. All she's ever wanted was to be accepted.
When she ends up with a price on her head, she unlocks Pandora's Box by completing the ritual to get her Bone magic. The chaos that ensues challenges her to really understand who she is and what she wants. Along the way, she learns that she's stronger than she ever imagined.
I loved Hoxa's characters. She addresses some interesting concepts in Bone Witch, including prejudice. What happens when everything you know is built in a lie? Does the end result really justify the means? Follow Winter as her world is completely stripped and rebuilt. Will she make the right choices?
Voluntary and honest review after receiving ARC (advanced reader copy)."
I received an ARC of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving my honest review.
The story starts off with a bang with the main character Winter Wayne fighting 3 vampires protecting another vampire James which she takes care of. She had signed up for a job with James to deliver a package the next day to a Jullian who is a blood witch. This job sets in motion an energetic ride into keeping herself alive but others also. Winter is a bone witch without her ancestry powers which makes her magic not reliable so she relies on her fighting skills. Now she's up against the ECU which is a paranormal branch of the government. Winter decides to complete the ritual so she can obtain her ancestry powers. When she does this her own genetic past is revealed which makes her magic harder to control.
The plot of the story is well thought out. You have the outer conflict between the ECU and bounty hunters with Winter and Jullian. Then you have the inner conflict with Winter and her genetics. The characters are formed well and their continued growth in the story is a bonus. This story is a great beginning to a new series which is interesting and grabs the readers attention. You can't wait to see what happens next.
I couldn't put this book down so I was up till 2:00AM to finish reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an energetic read to occupy your time. I will be checking out the other books this author has and the next book in this series will be on my to be read shelf on Good Reads.
