This book is not another Holocaust drama; it is not intended to repeat gruesome stories for the sake of evoking emotion.
I will always come away from a work with great pleasure when it plumbs the depths of feelings between a father and daughter who, separated over years, renew their acquaintances awkwardly, almost silently, but hand-in-hand; that mentions just enough of J.S. Bach to allow me to hear his masterful work imaginatively; and extends to me a forlornness for the diminished love of a mother but extends to her grand forgiveness on considering how that mother has suffered at the brutish hands of so many. This is a novel of love. . .untarnished. Its great strengths lie in a refusal to allow guilt to become shame. Rather, life moves on richly into the ever-needed world of care.
