Although LEDs generate heat, they are significantly cooler than CFLs. They’re also less fragile, considerably smaller and easier to transport. Color temperature is spot-on at 5500 K, mixing well with CFL and LED daylight light sources. Colors appear accurate and natural.
In a single bulb fixture, the Bonlux is perfect for use behind a subject to help separate them from the backdrop. For example, I clamp the fixture to the backside of a stool for sitting subjects. It can also work as a video fill light if you have four or six bulbs in a light bank. They’re too underpowered for use as a main light, even with six in a light bank. I tried brighter LED bulbs and, while bright enough for video work, the internal fans were too loud and ruined the audio. So while the Bonlux is not as bright as I hoped, it’s dead silent and another useful tool for my studio.
This is a fantastic bulb for studio photography when you want constant lighting. It is both brighter and more compact than 45w and 85w CFLs.
I bought these to replace both 45w and 85w CFLs in 16"x20" softboxes similar to the popular Limo ones here on Amazon. Two of the 45w CFLs had failed and the 85w bulbs were too large to install more than two in the boxes (four E26/27 sockets in each). I wanted to go with LEDs for their smaller size and increased light output. The Bonlux 40w LED studio lights is what I selected to try.
For my initial order, I purchased four 40w lights. They arrived promptly (thanks to Prime) and were well packaged. The bulbs had a hard plastic shrink wrap around them and each was stored in its own cardboard box. Everything appeared to arrive in good condition.
A quick check showed all of the lights came on with no malfunctioning LEDs.
The lights were about the same diameter as the 45w CFLs and just a bit longer than the 45w bulbs. The LED bulbs were significantly lighter, shorter and smaller around than the 85w CFLs.
I took some simple measurements of the lights to compare output. All measurements were taken with a calibrated Extech HD450 (yes - not ideal, but suitable for my purposes here.) The light sensor was set up at 16" from the front of the softbox with the facing surface of the softbox pointing at the sensor. The box was not moved during any of the testing. As mentioned, the box is 16"x20". Light measurements were taken after 2 minutes of the bulbs warming up. Ambient lighting was measured as 67 lux.

The lights are obviously brighter to the eye. One additional thing I noticed is that the CFLs have a wide variation in light output over time while the LEDs tend to be much more steady. So, I expect to see very little exposure variances when shooting with these lights.
Based on my initial testing and use, I ordered additional 40w LED bulbs and look forward to using them.
Bonlux contacted me directly and sent replacements for my burned out bulbs (40 W). Their customer service staff are excellent and they will stand behind their products. (Again, the 20 W bulbs I have are working well - almost 9-months in use.
I brought two of these (40 W) and both burned out after 7-months of use. (I also have 2 of the 20W that were installed at the same time as the 40W bulbs - the 20W bulbs are working well.)
