Product Description

2012 Original Broadway Cast Recording of the Frank Wildhorn, Don Black and Ivan Menchell musical featuring Broadway stars Laura Osnes & Jeremy Jordan along with Claybourne Elder, Louis Hobson, Michael Lanning, Melissa Van Der Schyff & more. It was nominated for 2 Tony Awards, 5 Drama Desk Awards and 3 Outer Critics Circle Awards. At the height of the Great Depression, two small-town kids from the middle of nowhere became the biggest folk heroes in all America. They craved adventure and each other. Their names were Bonnie and Clyde. Unafraid, unashamed, and irresistible, their daring story of love and crime captured the imagination of a country.

I have been a Frank Wildhorn fan since I first listened to his Jekyll and Hyde Complete Works. I was a freshmen in college, and spent the Christmas vacation listening to that set and nothing else. The year was 1995, prior to the Broadway premiere of the show in 1997. I enjoyed the pop feel and the relatability of Wildhorn's score then. It was easy to listen to over and over again.

Bonnie and Clyde is a matured and sophisticated version of that. Wildhorn takes the rockabilly, downtrodden feeling of the depression, yet still Broadway. It's a fine line that Wildhorn treads with expert finesse. Don't let the critics scare you away from this recording.

Every track advances the plot of the rampaging couple, and sweeps you along in the adventure. Some of the highlights are Clyde's Raise a Little Hell, that is performed to perfection by Jeremy Jordan, Blanche/Buck's You're Goin' Back to Jail, Bonnie/Clyde's This World Will Remember Us, and Bonnie/Clyde's Picture Show.

The score encompasses country and western with a little blues and gospel thrown in there. All prevelant in the south during that time.

The lyrics by Don Black are an excellent match for the music and the time-period. The talent of the cast is unmatched. I cannot speak highly enough about Jeremy Jordan as Clyde, Laura Osnes as Bonnie, Melissa van der Schyff as Blanche (Clyde's sister-in-law), Claybourne Elder as Buck (Clyde's brother), Michael Lanning as the Preacher, and Louis Hobson as Ted the sheriff. All are in top form on this CD.

The booklet included is absolutely BRILLIANT. 23 pages of color pictures from the Broadway production, liner notes, a story outline, pictures of the real Bonnie and Clyde, and the lyrics to all the songs. (An added bonus is Bonnie Parker's The Trail's End, Bonnie's very own version of her story/life with Clyde.)

This album is, well WOW. Soaring, sweeping heartfelt songs, tap your foot rockabilly numbers, and oh such amazing voices. I was lucky enough to see this on Broadway during it's limited run, and this album is a wonderful preservation of the faboulous music. The 30 page book that comes with it is beautifully done. Besides just the song lyrics, there are amazing pictures from the show, historical pictures of the real Bonnie & Clyde, and the actual poem written by Bonnie that tells their story. You will not be disapointed with this purchase.

Just got it in mail, listened to 1st 6 songs and had to stop to write: luv it, luv it, luv it, luv it! Laura's "How 'Bout a Dance" will break your heart. Sounds even better than expected. Only got to see this awesome show one time and absolutey adored it. Seems like I've been waiting for CD forever. So happy when it arrived in the mail this morning! So glad B&C was recorded. I'm in heaven :)

My expectations were moderate but I love Frank Wildhorn so I gave the musical a try. Flawless! Everything about this album is incredible. Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan are pitch perfect. Dyin' Ain't So Bad and its reprise made me tear up, just pitch perfect. Every track was invigorating and the music was just beautiful. No idea why this show didn't take Broadway by storm.

No doubt Frank Wildhorn has his detractors, and sometimes I agree ("Wonderland"), but credit when it's due: "Bonnie and Clyde" is his best score since "Jekyll and Hyde" (Though maybe one of his foreign shows is just as good? Haven't gotten to those yet.). Featuring a blend of rockabilly, ballads, country pop, gospel, and traditional show tunes, the music is well suited to the story of the infamous outlaws, played here with striking vocal chops by up-and-comers Jeremy Jordan (showing more star power here than on the "Newsies" recording) and Laura Osnes, who earned a surprise Tony nomination for this role (well, not so surprising once you've listened to this recording).

One of the major complaints against Wildhorn over the years has been that his music isn't theatrical enough--that his scores are a string of blandly repetitive pop tunes all pitched at the same level, without doing enough to reveal characters or move plot, as theater songs should (Of course his lyricists should share blame for the latter). Here, working with Don Black, he's come up with a slew of attractive songs that are variably moody, melodic, and, most importantly, effective. There's real momentum as the score gets going, and a good attempt to develop the inner contrasts of the nefarious duo's personalities.

Standouts include "How `bout a Dance," Bonnie's seductive come-on to Clyde, Osnes's big solo "Dyin' Ain't So Bad" and "You Love Who You Love," a duet with Melissa Van Der Schyff, who also triumphs in the poignant ballad "That's What You Call a Dream." As Clyde, Jordan shows off good range with the angry, rock-tinged "Raise a Little Hell," and a sweeter side with the winsome "Bonnie," among some other good numbers. There are a couple songs that don't score quite as high, but on the whole, I really like this score and recording. Could this be Wildhorn's first Tony win? (I know, I know--not likely).

The legend of Bonnie & Clyde is not just about bank robbers or poverty or crime --- at the crux of their story is their incredibly passionate love for each other. The Broadway play captured that, and played it out with its incredible musical score. This CD captures all of that, from opening curtain to its sad conclusion. The performers all have strong voices and this CD showcases them well.
