Boogie Board Sync 9.7-Inch LCD eWriter
Say goodbye to paper and jack note-taking to a whole new level with the Boogie Board Sync LCD eWriter. It's estimated that it takes approximately 24 trees to produce a ton of printing and writing paper, so wouldn't it be cool if you could find something elegant and refined yet unapologetically digital to replace the bulky tree-bothering analog technology of the notebook? A memo-taking lightsaber, as opposed to a clumsy and random jotter if you will. Well, the Boogie Board Sync, might just be the answer. And then some. On this battery-powered 9.7" LCD tablet you can draw / write / doodle as if it were a pristine sheet of writing paper. The advanced Reflex LCD writing surface feels like a spot-on match - you can even vary line thickness, depending on how lightly (or heavily) you apply the stylus. But heck, why just use the stylus? Daub with your finger, scribble with a pen lid, use any object you can find to boost your stylographic prowess; it's like an electronic Etch-A-Sketch. And when you're finished, just tap the button at the top to clear the screen in an instant. No crumpled paper, no messy rubbings-out. And with a rechargeable battery that'll last up to 5 days, no more wasted paper either. But here's the kicker. You can also save hundreds of pages to memory, transfer files to a computer, tablet or smart phone, share messages with Evernote, or collaborate on the big screen instantly and wirelessly via Bluetooth. Optional free software even adds a virtual whiteboard presentation tool. Perfect for students, teachers, businessmen and women... heck anyone who carries around a notepad and pen. So save yourself the eco-guilt, smarten up your looks and carry on scribbling like a pro. This is the Boogie Board Sync 9.7" LCD eWriter you've been looking for.

I highly recommend trying a Boogie Board in person (any model will do) before purchasing the Sync because that will tell you a lot about whether or not you can enjoy writing on the device.
The Sync is just like any other Boogie Board except that it can record and store your pen strokes. This means that you can't erase a line (just like pen & paper) and you can't "load" a note on the device that you previously saved. The Boogie Board isn't a "screen" or display like an iPad or other tablet, which is part of the reason it works so well.
Devices that use a screen for drawing require your pen strokes to go through a number of steps before they show up on the display, which can lead to delays or "lag" between the time you move the pen and when the line shows up. The faster or more complex your movement, the more lag. This makes taking notes fast on most devices impossible, but on the Boogie Board you're "activating" the pixels on the writing surface directly by the pressure of the stylus, so there is no lag or delay.
The precision and detail possible on the Boogie Board exceeds any other device I've used, which includes all iPads, many Android tablets and other more obscure devices. Even with high-end stylus the limitations of the digitizers used in tablets prevents them from coming anywhere close to the kind of fine detail pen and paper are capable of. I won't say that the Sync can match a fine pen, but it's pretty close to the average ballpoint, and much better than the "fat gel pen" that the best tablets can manage.
So in addition to being a nice writing surface, when the page gets full the Sync can save the page to internal memory so you can erase everything and start on a new page. The internal memory can hold something like 2000 pages, so you can go a pretty long time before you need to worry about running out of storage. The battery life is also excellent (going on more than a week since my first charge) so it's feasible that you could go "off the grid" with the Sync for quite awhile before running out of memory or power.
When you're ready to review you notes, the Sync can be attached to any computer via USB and the saved pages can be read like files off a flash drive. If you don't like cables you can use Bluetooth instead, and transfer the files using your operating system's built-in Bluetooth file transfer software, or install the Sync software provided by the vendor to automatically copy the files on to your computer.
The vendor's software has some other cool features that let you use the Sync like a "digital whiteboard", as well as use it like a mouse. There's also mobile apps for iOS and Android that will sync your drawings over Bluetooth and can then push them up to Evernote automatically (you can also email the drawings and export other ways as well).
As others have mentioned the software could use some work and it is somewhat unstable (crashes occasionally). The Evernote synchronization seems hit-or-miss, but I haven't tested it enough to know what the exact cause of that is. The upside of this is that the drawings are stored on the device's memory, so if the software crashes you can just try again without loosing work. In the long run I'd expect the software to improve, but since the files are accessible without the software, there's an opportunity for others to develop better software if the vendor chooses not to improve it.
One other note I'll mention is that the writing surface does seem to be sensitive to cold, in that when it's cold it seems less responsive and drawings have less contrast and require more pressure to show up than when the device is at room temperature (bear in mind that I live in Wisconsin, so when I say "cold" I mean single-digits fahrenheit). When my Sync first arrived it was cold from transport and was hard to see, but after an hour in the house it was warmed to about 65 degrees and worked much better.
The Boogie Board Sync trades the versatility of a general-purpose tablet for a dramatically-improved writing experience, better writing performance, incredible battery life and substantially lower price. If you are looking for a way to achieve the convenience and security of electronic note taking without extremely compromising the writing experience, the Boogie Board Sync might be just what you've been waiting for.
Just look at the pictures. I was mostly interested in how this would behave with my PC as I am currently looking for a means of writing notes for design projects without having to keep tons of notebooks laying around. This works perfectly. I am so thrilled with it! I can either save my notes to the boogie board (called "BB" from now on), or I can open their desktop app and record them live! As you are writing, the image appears on the desktop. The best part about this is you can change the stoke color! Once you're done, hit save and it will be turned into a pdf. Quality is not going to blow your mind but it is definitely functional.
The BB only communicates when "powered on", but you can write on it in the off state. Beware: anything you write will the BB is off WILL NOT BE SAVED. The device is not taking a capture of what you wrote when you click the save button, it is recording your strokes real-time.To record anything for later, the BB must be powered on. Anything you write while powered off cannot be saved (unless you take a picture with a camera). One thing to note: if the device is powered on and you hit "erase", it does clear the screen but the file actually gets saved as well. It goes into a separate storage location that you can access (tested with the desktop app). This is good for accidents, but if you're worried about privacy for any reason, the erase button effectively saves the file, moves it to a typically inaccessible directory, and wipes the screen. It does not only wipe the screen. For sensitive things, keep the BB turned off when writing.
I also tested this with my phone and it worked well there too. You have all this functionality and more on the desktop app so I will not be using the phone version myself. I can take the BB with me, and when I get back home I just turn it on and it "syncs" everything over to my PC! And it does it automatically, without me needing to do a thing (this feature can be disabled).
In short, I love it and I'm glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews.

The only thing I would advise is to get a spare stylus. The product comes with one stylus, and its the only stylus that will save/ sync notes. you can write on the device with any round tipped edge (pen lid etc) and it will make notes, but they aren't picked up by the technology that allows you to save the notes or sync them via blue tooth. I also tried a stylus from another boogie board device (the 4.5 inch) and that doesn't work either. Neither do other graphic tablet stylus.
As a UK customer, I couldn't find anywhere in the UK that sell replacement styluses, I eventually had to buy one from USA for $19.99 and pay £17 to ship it priority (2-4 days to arrive) because I use this device every day at University. The slower shipment was £15 for the stylus and delivery and then takes up to 17 days to arrive. Now that I have the stylus back, I have tied it to the boogie board so it doesn't get lost again.
The app that syncs to this device is the Ewriter Sync and allows the pages to be blue toothed to an iPad. Each page is individual when you plug it into the computer, but if you want a PDF with multiple pages, select the pages you want in the document, export them into an email and send them to yourself. This combines pages together rather than just a collection of individual sheets.
Information below will be updated should I find solutions/workarounds. If anything below is incorrect, let me know in the comments.
PROS
1) Reasonably good build; does not feel cheap.
2) Whilst writing on the tablet w/ the pen, the response time is near instantaneous - cannot notice any lag.
3) 1 week battery life reasonably good.
4) Evernote sync works very well.
CONS (In no particular order of priority)
1) No way to add new pages to existing document. Have to manually merge PDF pages. It would have been better if the Sync/VDC app had an option to add a new page to the currently-open document.
2) Whilst writing on the tablet, contrast could be better.
3) Sync Virtual Desktop Companion software (mac) not updated in a long time (2014) - indicates stagnation of software development/lack of roadmap.
4) Digitizer mode (tracks mouse on desktop) really laggy over bluetooth.
5) No way to 'open' an existing diagram/document (e.g. one saved earlier onto PC/Evernote) and then "continue" to edit - can only ever start from scratch.
6) Cannot "partially erase" an existing diagram/sketch. (Probably my biggest gripe)
7) Sync Virtual Desktop Companion software (mac) does not have auto-update check/capability.
8) Sync Virtual Desktop Companion software (mac) does not have help tooltips when mouse hovered over icons (i.e to understand "what does this option/button do?") (not a major gripe)
The erase button can sometimes be hit and miss.
It's a mediocre product that clearly needs further development.
