Five Stars. "Stories about great pets abound, yet there is always room for one more. The Book of Barkley holds its own in this genre. Like all animal lovers, Johnson realized many life lessons with Barkley as her companion, not the least of which that home is in the heart."
San Francisco Book Review
"Anyone who has ever owned a pet will understand the compelling bond that develops between the pet and its owner. It's a bond that opens up thoughts and memories and expands the owner's human perspective of the world and the life that he/she has lived and is living. This is a story about that bond, the relationship that opens up the heart and reveals an understanding, a comprehension of the overall meaning of life. Well done!"
-Readers Choice International Book Award 2015 Silver Winner
"This is much more than a mere memoir - it is a story of life and how to live it, and how we humans can learn to live our lives better if we'd only learn to live it like a dog does. A five-star book that definitely merits the Awesome Indies Seal of Excellence."

I read this book after having lost my own beloved Charlie. I found the book brought back many fond memories of my dog, which made the reading more intense and memorable. I hope LB Johnson has many more stories to tell, for I will be quite happy to read them!
If you have ever had a very special 4 legged dog friend, you have to read this story. But, fair warning, be sure you have a box of Kleenex close by as you will laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. Also be warned, it is very hard to put down until the last page. Ms. Johnson is a very talented writer, gifted with the ability to draw you in while she writes a story of love, loss, and rising above the pain to remember and cherish the love and lessons learned from a pair of brown eyes and lots of dog hair.
If you've ever given your heart to a fur baby and felt the sting of loss, then this book could help you with perspective.
I highly recommend it, if for no other reason than to float in the words so elegantly strung together that you'll laugh, you'll cry and you will come away refreshed with hope.
I've known Mrs. Johnson for a number of years, and I can honestly say I never saw her happier than when she had Barkley in her life. Even with all the 'little' things... but my favorite story is the kids at the back fence... :-D
Go get it and read it, you won't be disappointed!
There's no mistaking the author's wry sense of humor and her compassion for her best friend, Barkley. Readers will find themselves chuckling at the dog's antics; at the author and her canine companion sparring together as they try to outwit each other; and then lazing back with the couple on their days off as they relish the wonders of nature at work in their own backyard.
This is a book everyone should read. For pet owners, especially dog lovers, you'll find yourself nodding in understanding as you recall your pet playing the same games with you, fighting for your attention, and giving so much unconditional love in return for your time and caring. And for those of us who have loved and lost animal friends, you'll shed a tear here and there between the pages.
Get yourself a copy of The Book of Barkley .... better still, get several copies and hand them out as gifts to your animal-loving friends!
