Welcome back NYPD Det. John Corey, who last appeared in "The Lion".

In "The Book Case" we have the owner Otis Parker dead after a bookcase falls on him. Det. Corey, after examining the scene, doesn't believe it was accidental and sets out to find a murderer. He uncovers a few people who would prefer Otis in the "Great Beyond" rather than in his little store.

I found the book entertaining and a fast read. At 49 pages, it's short enough wherein Det. Corey's wisecracking dry humor doesn't dominate, as it seemed to in the past.

There are a number of reviewers complaining of characters not being developed well enough. Also a complaint is the identity of the suspects is known rather quickly. Remember, at 49 pages, this is very short. It doesn't have the luxury of time in full development or putting off identities until much later. It's a fraction the length of a full novel.
The interesting part is how Corey goes about getting his admissions and confessions. One very small twist at the end is a nice addition.

There are some shorts out there written by top authors that really do not cut it and fall rather flat. Mr. DeMille has given us a very good, concise story in a very short amount of time.

A good short read! John Cory is the best! Read it and all the other great Nelson Demille books as well.

You need to be a skilled author to write a good Novella or Kindle single. With "Book Case" DeMille has shown his skills in writing a short detective novella that comfortably completes an accident/murder investigation in less than 50 pages.

We meet John Corey again in his days in NYPD when he is called from his breakfast coffee to investigate whether the death of a bookseller when a bookcase falls on top of him is accidental or murder. During the investigation Corey still has time for some of the dark wisecracking humour of his latter life (especially recently in The Panther):

* "The New York Times would say ...'Killed by the books he loved".
* "Can your driver get me a ham and egg on a roll?" "Sure, do you want a Lipitor with that?"
* "My wife thought that cooking and ....ing were two cities in China."

I found this short book very satisfying because DeMille didn't rush things but seemed to cover every base and John Corey wrapped up everything before lunchtime.

THE BOOK CASE, by Nelson DeMille, stars our favorite NYPD detective, John Corey. This short novella is about bookstore owner, Otis Parker, recently married, who owns the Dead End Book Store. Otis enjoys collecting old books but, sadly, is a poor businessman and an even poorer judge of human character. John Corey, our clever and crusty detective is sent to the store to check out poor Mr. Parker who appears to be dead under the weight of a fallen bookcase. Outwardly, it looks like an accident. However, John Corey has his doubts. De Mille brings interesting characters into the mix and by noon our detective hero has the mystery solved. As usual, Corey makes the dialogue light and spicy. If you want a short and fun mystery to read during your lunch hour, The Book Case is for you. I rate Book Case a 4 out of a possible 5.

Since Nelson DeMille is one of my favorite authors, it is no wonder that character, John Corey, is one of my favorite book characters of all time! John Corey is a cop, a cynic and a smart a__ to boot. I absolutely love him! He is such an entertaining liar! You always know what he's thinking---he tells the reader and it is usually not what he's told everyone else. The plot was original (murder in a unique way), the characters were well developed (we've all met them in real life) and the story moved right along in a smooth fashion. I was sorry for the book to end. I believe this is the fourth book that Nelson DeMille has written featuring John Corey...More, please!

I'm having a difficult week with my brother passing. This short story was just what I needed to help me relax a bit and be able to fall asleep. I hadn't read anything by this author before and found it witty and drew me in from the first screen on my Kindle. While perhaps the 'who dunnit' was somewhat evident, I still found the clue-hunting enlightening and made for a short, light-read before sleep, just perfect.

How very interesting! I am a many-decades long mystery reader and retired librarian who has not had a previous encounter with Mr. Demille or with Kindle singles for that matter. I decided to try both, but before reading I looked at several reviews. They are all over the place from 1 to 5 stars and everything in between. Hmm!
After reading this short story I believe that readers ought to see this for what it is -- an attempt by this author to gain new followers. I feel he succeeds by introducing his detective's wit, something noted by many reviewers already. He also makes some simple and clear explanations of police work and the thought process that goes along with solving crimes. For me that is his real achievement here, and NOT whether he made the solution tricky or not, as some complained about. I will definitely pick up some of the recommended titles by this author. I hope to enjoy further the adventures of John Corey.

The Book Case
Nelson DeMille

A kindle single, New York Times Bestselling Author. It's a short story for about forty pages.

This is a well-made Kindle ebook for me because each page accounts for one percent of the whole contents for a certain setting. When you turn a page, the percentage is incremented by one.

A bookshop owner is killed by a falling bookcase. Detective John Corey investigates the case and encounters some suspicious men and women. The key technique is how he got the crime suspects to confess. It's really interesting.

Here are some interesting quotes from John's versions. You can guess the atmosphere of the story. "There are six major motives. Ready? Profit, revenge, jealousy, concealment of a crime, avoidance of humiliation or disgrace and homicidal mania", "Sometimes I think being a cop is less dangerous than being married." and "Never have sex with a woman who has more problems than you."

I love Nelson DeMille's books. I have been reading them for well over 20 years and have liked them all. And "The Book Case" was great as far as it went, but it was way, way too short. I couldn't believe it was over. I kept touching my tablet trying to get back to the story. The main character was just what I expect from DeMille....smart mouth and full of humor, and of course clever. So it was worth the read, but on a rainy afternoon I was hoping to be reading well into the night. I ended up closing my tablet and started to reread "Spencerville" the old-fashion way. Had to get my DeMille fix someway!
