The Book of Common Courage is a collection of prayers, poems, and blessings to help you find a flicker of strength in the small and hard moments of life. Beloved author and therapist K. J. Ramsey invites you to journey word-by-word through Psalm 23 to experience how the Good Shepherd is with you and for you, especially in the valleys of life. When you struggle to find the words to hold your pain or trauma, be encouraged to cultivate the compassion and courage to believe that your story will, in fact, end in joy.
Through K. J.'s lyrical and emotive writing, you are invited to:
- Surrender your anxiety and your tears to a faithful God
- Validate your emotions and embrace them as the gift they are

- Refresh your faith with a peace that lasts
- Experience newfound confidence in prayer
- Remember that even when pain is not past-tense, God is still present
Courage is a common hope that we can cultivate together. These prayers and poems can be read in group settings--among friends, families, and worshipping communities--and are also ideal for personal reflection.

The Book of Common Courage is a breath of fresh air from the beginning. After I cracked the pages of this book and began reading, I heard the echo of Exodus 3:5 “Do not come any closer, … Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Indeed this book is holy ground. Holy ground for the traumatized, the spiritually abused, the devoted, the seeker, and the doubter.
There is a quote that reads: “What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.”
This book is a well. A well of poems, blessings, and prayers that will cradle your heart from beginning to end. Her warmth, sincerity, and tenderness, is found on every page. You can sense that she is just as wonderful, if not more so, in “real-life.”
Now I must say, one does not simply read through K.J.’s writings carelessly. No, they are to be read and digested slowly. I often come back and reread her passages. Sometimes I process them in my journal. Nevertheless, Ramsey’s work is so profound you’ll want to return to it time and time again. This book reminded me I am seen, known, and loved. And isn’t that what we all want to feel in this life?
I want to ease any concerns you may have about purchasing a book of poetry. Although I enjoy some poetry, I often find it difficult to understand, but you’ll find K. J. ‘s writing style very accessible. I think there is something in this book for every reader. Something that will touch your heart and allow you to feel loved and held.
If I could buy everyone a copy of this book, I would. Unfortunately, I can’t. I can only encourage you all to buy a copy for yourself today and allow her words to permeate your soul. You’ll be pondering the contents long after you’ve finished reading it. It is aesthetically pleasing inside and out and would also make a cherished gift for anyone special in your life.
Reader, potential customer … you are SO loved! If you don’t feel so, you just may begin to believe it after the turn of the last page.
This book feels like rest. It is a perfect night stand or coffee table companion to pick up and reread again and again. Her poems are lovely reminders of God's goodness, grace, and love for us. The poems address everything from mental health, physical health, and our spiritual health all throughout while bringing us back to scripture and the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Alongside each poem are beautiful snippets of K.J.'s photography too giving our eyes something beautiful to delight in as we read. The book felt personal while also being relatable and touching. It brought me near tears on several occasions. You can tell it was written from the heart.
My only criticism, if I can even call it that, was that I didn't care for some of the biblical translations used to quote scripture throughout the book. Some I didn't mind as much as others and I believe this to be a personal preference more than anything else. I felt they robbed the passage of scripture of some of it's depth.
Regardless, I will treasure this beautiful book and revisit it often. Thank you for an other inspiring read K.J. Ramsey! You are a treasure!
I still have some reading to do, but that's okay because this book will take some time to process. Each page holds so many thoughts and emotions - with such deep impact - that you need a moment to dwell on what you've read.
I grew up deeply enmeshed in fundamentalism. Questions, doubt, anger, grief, and any other "taboo" topics were dismissed, minimalized, or mocked. And the wrath of God was always the focus. I was terrified. So many of us were.
KJ Ramsey is one of the first authors I've ever seen frame deconstruction and recovery from church harm as a beautiful and necessary thing - not something to be merely tolerated and rushed through.
The Book of Common Courage is a gentle invitation to bring all of our "taboo" topics and broken pieces into the light, holding them up before the Lord. It brings the grace and love of God to the forefront of the story, without diminishing his holiness in any way.
It's also just a beautifully put together book. The size of it, the hardcover, all of the gorgeous pictures throughout. I showed my friend my copy and her first descriptor was "calming".
And calming it is. And healing. If you grew up like I did - loving God but living in fear of him - please buy this book. You need these reminders. You need to know (as the 2nd page reminds us, leaving me near tears almost immediately) that we call Him Lord, and He calls us Beloved.
