Top Customer Reviews
1) Software encryption: this is enabled by the user by adding password protection via the included WD software. It can be enabled or disabled by the user (assuming you have the correct password).
2) Hardware encryption: there is none. However, the RAID is implemented via hardware in the MyBook Duo enclosure. The implications of this design are as follows:
a. The proprietary nature of the hardware RAID implementation means that the individual disk drives CANNOT be read outside of the MyBook Duo enclosure. I believe this is not unique to the MyBook Duo as many other RAID enclosures have the same characteristics.
b. The RAID implementation is the same from enclosure to enclosure. Therefore, a drive created in one MyBook Duo enclosure CAN be installed into another MyBook Duo enclosure and READ SUCCESSFULLY. (As I have two MyBook Duo’s, I have physically tested this.)
c. If the MyBook Duo enclosure fails for any reason, a replacement enclosure will read the disks successfully. The data IS NOT LOST.
3) With respect to temperature, when running continuously for an hour or more (such as when performing a backup), the drives reach temperatures in excess of 55C. While I believe the drives can endure such temperatures, I believe that is hotter than desired. Therefore, I recommend that Western Digital updates its design of the MyBook Duo enclosure to include a small exhaust fan.
4) I have added small, 80 mm (3”) USB-powered variable-speed fans that sit directly on top of the MyBook Duo enclosures to help expel the excess heat from the drives. Even though the fans are small and virtually silent, they are probably overkill as it only takes a minimal amount of extra air movement (the fans are at the lowest setting) to keep the drives comfortably below 40C, even when running continuously.
5) Overall, I am happy with the MyBook Duo (8TB drives). While I do believe the lack of a fan is a non-optimal design decision, it is easy to add an exterior fan that works very effectively at maintaining more desirable drive temperatures.
It's cheaper than purchasing the two drive separately. After following up with tech support, they confirmed that the raid 1 option is glitchy. The software can't change the raid option. So much for a stable backup tool. Just took out the drives and put them in my server and setup raid 1 as online backup storage. Looks nice on the desk and all the extra parts fit inside. Might use the case as a book end or something that it's good at.
-- POST RMA update - Same problem just 2 weeks turn around time. The unit will NOT configure to mirror. The staff was going to insure that it would and it doesn't. This was supposed to be and external mirror backup device. Now I have to get 2 external cases and make a sequential backup routine. Wasted hours going over the tools on performing the setup.
Found out the software for configuration is compatible with windows 10 x64 not 7 x64 After using a win 10 setup just for modification to raid 1 re-attached to any version operating system and was able to format as mirror operation. However, if a drive does go "Bad" the device errors out and you cant get to the data. You will have to replace the defective drive or removed the good drive and directly attach to retrieve data. So much of QC testing.
We apologize for the experience you encountered; this is not the world class support we strive to provide. Standard troubleshooting steps should have included a firmware update on the device along with downloading and utilizing the latest version of WD Drive Utilities from our website.

If you are using this drive with the Xbox One and use a lot of accessories that also need USB ports, you may want to buy a 4-port USB hub. I wasn't thinking about that when I bought this and had to pick one up later.
I'm running this on a Mac. The only major negative for Mac users is the complete lack of instructions. Mac users need to reformat the drives of course but should first download the Mac version of the WD Drive Utility directly from WD's site (which is used to monitor the drives, set up raid, reformat and so on). There really should be a quick start guide which mentions this info for Mac users so I'm deducting 1 Star for the lack of documentation. Otherwise, highly recommended for fast, reliable storage with the versatility of hardware raid.
