I was originally delighted to see The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church in Kindle format. One less thing to lug in a bag or backpack. Since this is a reference book, I anticipated that navigation would be more like at textbook than a book. My expectations were that I would be able to quickly search for the passages I need and easily move through paragraphs as needed. I also needed an easy way to highlight, bookmark and print text. A bonus would be for the text-to-speech work.
This is essentially only a .pdf sold as a book. Poor engineering and lack of user friendliness causes the Kindle version to fail on almost every level. Search works, but its difficult to navigate through different reference areas. You have to flip through each page to get back to the contents if you need something there. The only way that I've found to print has been to take screenshots and print those. I've also not been able to get text-to-speech to work reliably.
It does not compare favorably to other reference books that I have owned on Kindle. The idea is excellent, however the execution of the product needs some TLC.
So why am I giving it three stars?
1. Contains the same information as the print version.
2. The Kindle version is lighter weight than a paperback.
3. I think the keyword search works well (if you are very clear on your search terms).
4. Favorable price comparison as opposed to the paper version.
5. Easier on the environment.
6. It downloaded in less than a minute.
I would have gone to two stars or below if it weren't for these attributes. The Kindle version is an idea whose time has come. I just hope the book for the next quadrennium is more user friendly.
Hopefully the convention will take a stand and make this book more "readable".
