Where, oh where was this book when I was a Middle Grade book-dragon?!
This is the perfect journal / reading record for any parent or teacher who wishes to reward an avid booklover, or encourage a more reluctant one.
The book is packed with all sorts of fun reading activities: crafty ideas like bookmark templates; review templates to give students an idea of what to think about when / after reading a book; everything you need to set up your own book club; reading challenges for the voracious and adventurous; and some book-related games, including a particularly cool version of Bookish Top Trumps.
Minishine, at 7, is really on the lower end of the age range for being able to use this independently, although both her and BabyBows (4) were happy to try some of the challenges and games with my support.
The pictures and fonts are perfectly designed to lure children in – with simple, large print and cartoony styles that look enticing rather than intimidating to more nervous readers.
In fact, we only discovered one huge drawback with this book… all three of us are now fighting over whose copy it is! That’s right – I love this Middle Grade book-of-bookish-goodness so much that I have pinched it from my own children, and been forced to agree to buy them their own copies to atone.
This is actually no problem at all, as I’ll be needing to buy copies for all of the 8-12 year olds in our friend and family circle anyway!!!
“I AM NO ORDINARY BOOKWORM. I TREASURE BOOKS LIKE GOLD. I BREATHE FIRE AND STORIES LIKE OTHER PEOPLE BREATHE AIR. THE POWER OF WORDS FILLS MY WINGS AS I CIRCLE THE WORLD TIME AND TIME AGAIN.”
I AM A BOOK DRAGON.
– Lexi Rees, The Book Dragon Club
Review by Steph Warren of Bookshine and Readbows blog
One activity he got properly involved in was when he dressed up as Spiderman and pretended he was him. His favourite was making his own bookmarks. "I liked it had bookmarks you can cut out as I always lose mine."
Due to the coronavirus lockdown Haydn found he couldn't make full use of the book at the moment. "There's things I couldn't do with not being able to see my friends." Hopefully, he can take another look when he is back with his friends. It has been a difficult time for children.
His mother is going to send the book into school when he eventually returns, with a recommendation the year below his class do some of the activities. Meanwhile, Haydn has enjoyed being asked to review this book - a very Book Dragon Club activity!
I asked him whether his friends would like The Book Dragon Club: "The girls might like it more." As my grand-neice in California has her 7th birthday on Midsummer Day I had ordered this book together with some others: stickers, Aesop's fables, jokes and learn-to-draw. What did Haydn think of my choice?" Maybe if you got other books to read with it and you were 5 or 6." So maybe I made a sound choice.
