Shows its age. Useful photos, color fidelity questionable. Unless you are studying the Book of Durrow in particular, get the Book of Kells CD-ROM in which each page is totally zoomable and it is well indexed.

The Book of Durrow is an example of an illuminated Latin New Testament. It is believed to have been written and designed in one of the churches or monasteries associated with Saint Columba, and was certainly in existence by circa AD 900. It currently resides in Trinity College Dublin, and the author is the Keeper of Manuscripts there. He has completed a similar work on the Book of Kells. His book is copiously illustrated with both examples of the script, written in what is known as 'insular' Latin, and examples of the 'illuminated' pages, that is illustrated and coloured pages. It covers the subjects of the origins of the Durrow Monastery, the origins and history of the book itself, and has several chapters devoted to the links between the 'illuminations' and wider 'insular' art, including jewellery. It also compares the illustrations with art found elsewhere, including Scandinavia and Syria, reminding us that European culture was not a sum, of 'provincial' sub-cultures, but bound together by a set of cultural, religious and mythological conventions, and not least one common language, Latin. This would seem to me to be a good introduction to a text often referred to in histories of early medieval Ireland or the Anglo-Saxon period.
