I use the drive for general backups of 3 different computers about twice a month, and I use my HTPC and the media files maybe twice a week. Most people would consider this light use. It was working fine until last week. With the bad weather, power went out for about 10 minutes. When it came back on, the drive refused to mount. When I tried mounting it on a different computer, it said it was blank and asked if I wanted to format it. All the data appears to be gone.
The good news for me is that very little of the information on the drive was not already backed up or copied onto one of the other computers. But a large number of my mp3 files will have to be re-burned from my CD collection. And since the backup drive failed so quickly, it;s a good thing the actual computers have been fine.
I bought this HD with a lot of expectations in being able to use it. I was very pleased with the results and will be buying two more at the least.
I use this drive as a back-up so it can mirror my laptop with no problems. I also store movies, music, photos, and other misc media on it. So far I have had no problems with it.
It doesn't take up a lot of space, keeps cool, and is always ready to go when I need to access it. WD did an outstanding job with this latest model.
The software is easy to use and if you don't want the software taking up additional space you can always remove it with an application at WD's website.
I recommend this HD for anyone no matter what you want to use it for. I prefer it over all the other external HDs I have and will eventually move all the stuff I have on them onto these when I get more in.
1. It's unacceptably inflexible with regards to configuration in terms of controlling what gets backed up, what doesn't, etc. It's view to your data isn't by folder, it's by file type. So for example, you don't back up everything in My Documents; you back up all of your "Music." I want more precise control than that.
2. Performance is horrible. To be fair, this was running on an 8-year old Dell Dimension 8200. But - it's still a 2.0GHz Pentium with maxed-out memory running XP Pro, with USB 2.0 ports and current 7200 RPM drives with at least 8MB cache. Every other application on the machine still runs extremely well (hence the reason the machine continues to serve as our primary desktop). With SmartWare, I expected an initial period of a few hours of intense processing to get the baseline backup done, and then only brief bursts of activity as files get added and changed. What actually happened was the initial backup took around 12 hours (with CPU utilization at or near 100% on that one process), and then when it reported the backup was complete, SmartWare continued to consume around 50% of the CPU. At that point, launching Firefox, which normally takes a few seconds, took about 30 seconds to come up. Forget playing even a modest game. To make matters worse, each time a user logs back on to the machine, SmartWare starts all over with its "analysis" of how much "music," "movies," "documents," etc., are on the system - so it's as if it starts over with each user log on.
I've already started the process to return this. It will be replaced by something I already know works: an Acomdata Samba enclosure, a Western Digital black SATA drive, and SyncBack Pro software.
Sorry, WD, after many years of complete satisfaction, you dropped the ball on this one.
