However, I have two bones to pick. For one thing, this hard drive is a bit big and bulky, even for a 3TB. I realize it's a full sized one that plugs into the wall, but they could've slimmed down the casing considerably and made it much less bulky. That's more just an asthetic thing though, and I still have plenty of room for it.
My other gripe, which is even more annoying, is that it takes forever to load content from it. I have two passport drives that are 1 and 2 terabytes and they load almost instantly. However, this drive every time I bring it up on my computer, takes 30 seconds to a minute or sometimes more to bring up my data. This is aggravating because it happens every time. What's even more frustrating is when I'm watching a video on it and then I have to pause it for a period of say more than 10 minutes. Every time I return to it, I either have to bring up the drive again or wait a minute or so for the video to load again after taking it off pause.
Lately I have elected to bring the drive back up in Windows Explorer. The ridiculous thing though is that it still does this even if the drive is already open in Explorer. It should not take this long to load my data!
If you don't mind the annoyances I've pointed out, then this could be a good drive for you packed with lots of space, but if you want access to your data in the blink of an eye, find yourself a better drive or go with a Passport or two.
After installing the Western Digital 2TB External Hard Drive and having followed the instructions provided, the hard drive was a huge disappointment. The hd would not always boot up and had to be reinstalled to use it. An error message would appear on my computer. Having contacted WD, I was sent a new USB cable. That did not fix the problem. They said that I had two options: Standard option: to print off the return authorization they would send me, affix the postage and mail it back. From the state of Alaska, that mail would have taken 7-10 days). Upon their receipt they would mail me out a new drive. So that's another 7-10 days for it to get to me. So that's 2-3 weeks without the use of the product; and, I would be responsible for the postage charges for the return of their defective product. The other option was for me to provide my credit card number, they would put a hold charge of $185.00 on it and upon their receipt of the defective hd, they would release the $185.00 charge. They also would send me out immediately a new hd. The $185.00 charge seems excessive to me given that I paid $99.00 originally. My other concern is the need for my credit card information to be given out. After requesting to speak to a manager, WD agreed to send me a return authorization including return postage and mail me out a new hd promptly (without a credit card hold). Why could they not have done that in the first place without the need to escate to a manager. Scorecard: WD customer service: 0!
I then contacted Amazon.com and explained the situation. The end result (without having the need to escalate to a manager), is that I am shipping back the defective product to them, and a replacement has already been ordered. Scorecard: AMAZON 100%+ customer service.
I have owned WD external hd's in the past and never had a problem with them. After all of this, it it doubtful that I will purchase another WD product. The product itself may be good, however, the customer service was very unpleasant.
AMAZON.COM exceeded my expectations in their customer service. GO AMAZON!!

Update December 2017: It has now been 4 years running my Plex server almost constantly 24/7 and still no problems. I did in fact buy another 5tb my book after my initial review and i now am looking at 8Gb My book as that one is filled as well.I do not foresee changing from WD and i personally have had GREAT stability some drives lasting a decade ( i still use an old 500gb hdd CUZ IT WORKS! lol) Althought i consider drives to me a YMMV item, i highly recommend =)
I don't know if it is the size of the hard disk (2TB) because I do have a 1TB WD that I'm very happy with or the fact that I bought it online instead of a store (Maybe I'm just being old fashioned) but I do know that I will never buy a hard disk on amazon again. And I will never buy a WD hard disk again
I eventually formatted it and use it as a container of everything else. Big and empty, but not functional as as far as actually being useful. The WORST part is that I called Western Digital ahead of purchasing to ENSURE that the drive was able to communicate effectively, receiving hand over foot promises of this technological wonder. Big fat lie.
It is a drive, and can only be used like a big jump drive that needs ot be pulled int the wall. Fast! Sure, but not what I asked for WD.
I bought it against my instinct to go with Seagate because of the great price from Amazon. Trust me, go with Seagate. System images? get a 1 TB, you'll be fine.
