She couldn’t have been more than seven or eight years old. “Go ahead, ask your question,” her father urged, nudging her forward. She smiled shyly and said, “You’re my hero. Who’s yours?”

Many people—especially girls—have asked us that same question over the years. It’s one of our favorite topics.

HILLARY: Growing up, I knew hardly any women who worked outside the home. So I looked to my mother, my teachers, and the pages of Life magazine for inspiration. After learning that Amelia Earhart kept a scrapbook with newspaper articles about successful women in male-dominated jobs, I started a scrapbook of my own. Long after I stopped clipping articles, I continued to seek out stories of women who seemed to be redefining what was possible.

CHELSEA: This book is the continuation of a conversation the two of us have been having since I was little. For me, too, my mom was a hero; so were my grandmothers. My early teachers were also women. But I grew up in a world very different from theirs. My pediatrician was a woman, and so was the first mayor of Little Rock who I remember from my childhood. Most of my close friends’ moms worked outside the home as nurses, doctors, teachers, professors, and in business. And women were going into space and breaking records here on Earth.

Ensuring the rights and opportunities of women and girls remains a big piece of the unfinished business of the twenty-first century. While there’s a lot of work to do, we know that throughout history and around the globe women have overcome the toughest resistance imaginable to win victories that have made progress possible for all of us. That is the achievement of each of the women in this book.

So how did they do it? The answers are as unique as the women themselves. Civil rights activist Dorothy Height, LGBTQ trailblazer Edie Windsor, and swimmer Diana Nyad kept pushing forward, no matter what. Writers like Rachel Carson and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie named something no one had dared talk about before. Historian Mary Beard used wit to open doors that were once closed, and Wangari Maathai, who sparked a movement to plant trees, understood the power of role modeling. Harriet Tubman and Malala Yousafzai looked fear in the face and persevered. Nearly every single one of these women was fiercely optimistic—they had faith that their actions could make a difference. And they were right.

To us, they are all gutsy women—leaders with the courage to stand up to the status quo, ask hard questions, and get the job done. So in the moments when the long haul seems awfully long, we hope you will draw strength from these stories. We do. Because if history shows one thing, it’s that the world needs gutsy women.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is the first woman in US history to become the presidential nominee of a major political party. She served as the 67th Secretary of State after nearly four decades in public service advocating on behalf of children and families as an attorney, First Lady, and US Senator. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Chelsea Clinton is a champion for girls and women through her advocacy, writing, and work at the Clinton Foundation. She is also an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She lives in New York City with her husband, their children, and their dog.

GREAT BOOK!

This is a really unusual book. The first thing you've likely noticed about it is that it is written by the mother-daughter pair Hillary and Chelsea Clinton – and this book embraces its authorship. While providing extensive detail about each of the women showcased, this book frequently reads like a conversation between Hillary and Chelsea. As interesting as learning about the various women is, it is at least as intriguing to learn of their impact on the Clinton women's lives. For example, knowing that Nazis were bad from her many viewings of The Sound of Music, young Chelsea wrote to Ronald Reagan to express her opinion after he visited a cemetery where Nazis were buried. She never received a response, which led to her parents ensuring that no child's letter to the White House went unanswered during the Clinton Administration.

BOTTOM LINE: An extraordinary book well worth reading, but given that Hillary and Chelsea's voices shine through on every page, in our current political climate this book is likely best read by those who have positive feelings about the authors.

Stop hating on the Clintons

I haven’t read the book yet , but I went to order it and I wanted to read the reviews on here and how sad people that hate these two women , they did not read the book but yet decided to come on here and make it be about their political bias against the Clintons , went out of their way to do so .. I am buying the book and I hope that others do too.. too bad you hateful people on here can’t read , Just decided to think by leaving a bad review will not make others buy it and see for themselves, try reading the book , it’s not even about politics , so I am not understanding why you all hating

Well done compilation of over 100 of our world's fantastic, innovative, optimistic and brave women who have contributed to the earth, human rights, women's causes and in numerous other ways. [I love it because it's a series of mini profiles that can be read a few minutes at a time.] Thanks for spotlighting some of the influential and history making women who navigated tough roads and helped clear the path for all who followed. [Obviously not the place for political dissing. It's a book about HISTORY not politics!]

This book is a tale of patronising middle-class privilege distilled through some Wikipedia-level history and peppered with frequent (and irritating) personal commentary. The stories of the women who are chosen are secondary to the wider story: the Clinton story. (Disclosure: I say this a a very much left-leaning and Hillary supporting reader). It was interesting to discover some (although not many) previously unknown names, but the book has little merit as either a social commentary, a feminist handbook or a historical resource.

This wonderful book by Hilary & Chelsea Clinton is both educational and inspiring! I loved the book so much, I read it in two days. Intelligently written yet accessible to all, it was impactful & allowed me to understand snippets of the women against historical facts. Read it, enjoy it but most of all feel blessed that these gutsy women (Hilary & Chelsea included) paved the way for the inclusion and relevance of women in an oft male dominated world. A fabulous book.

This covers quite a lot of women but misses out many too. I don't like the way the parts that have been written by Hilary or Chelsea are highlighted as having been written by them. Not really relevant to the stories at hand. Could have been done better.
