She couldn’t have been more than seven or eight years old. “Go ahead, ask your question,” her father urged, nudging her forward. She smiled shyly and said, “You’re my hero. Who’s yours?”

Many people—especially girls—have asked us that same question over the years. It’s one of our favorite topics.

HILLARY: Growing up, I knew hardly any women who worked outside the home. So I looked to my mother, my teachers, and the pages of Life magazine for inspiration. After learning that Amelia Earhart kept a scrapbook with newspaper articles about successful women in male-dominated jobs, I started a scrapbook of my own. Long after I stopped clipping articles, I continued to seek out stories of women who seemed to be redefining what was possible.

CHELSEA: This book is the continuation of a conversation the two of us have been having since I was little. For me, too, my mom was a hero; so were my grandmothers. My early teachers were also women. But I grew up in a world very different from theirs. My pediatrician was a woman, and so was the first mayor of Little Rock who I remember from my childhood. Most of my close friends’ moms worked outside the home as nurses, doctors, teachers, professors, and in business. And women were going into space and breaking records here on Earth.

Ensuring the rights and opportunities of women and girls remains a big piece of the unfinished business of the twenty-first century. While there’s a lot of work to do, we know that throughout history and around the globe women have overcome the toughest resistance imaginable to win victories that have made progress possible for all of us. That is the achievement of each of the women in this book.

So how did they do it? The answers are as unique as the women themselves. Civil rights activist Dorothy Height, LGBTQ trailblazer Edie Windsor, and swimmer Diana Nyad kept pushing forward, no matter what. Writers like Rachel Carson and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie named something no one had dared talk about before. Historian Mary Beard used wit to open doors that were once closed, and Wangari Maathai, who sparked a movement to plant trees, understood the power of role modeling. Harriet Tubman and Malala Yousafzai looked fear in the face and persevered. Nearly every single one of these women was fiercely optimistic—they had faith that their actions could make a difference. And they were right.

To us, they are all gutsy women—leaders with the courage to stand up to the status quo, ask hard questions, and get the job done. So in the moments when the long haul seems awfully long, we hope you will draw strength from these stories. We do. Because if history shows one thing, it’s that the world needs gutsy women.

Chelsea Clinton has always been interested in making the world a better place. When she was a child in Little Rock, Arkansas, one of her favorite books was 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth, and as a teenager in Washington, D.C., she led her school’s service club. While at Stanford, Chelsea worked as a reading and writing tutor and volunteered at the Children’s Hospital. Today, she is Vice Chair of the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation where she helps lead the work of the Foundation across its various initiatives, with a particular focus on work related to health, women and girls, creating service opportunities, and empowering the next generation of leaders. Chelsea holds a BA from Stanford University, an MPH from Columbia University, and an MPhil and doctorate degree in international relations from Oxford University. She lives in New York City with her husband Marc, their children and their dog Soren.

This is a very high quality, beautiful book. I bought this book after hearing Senator Clinton and Chelsea interviewed on their tour. My intention was to read it and then forward it to my daughter, a physics PhD student. I have now decided to keep my copy and buy another to send to my daughter. There are so many brilliant, and as the title indicates, gutsy women featured in this book that I was never taught about when I was in school. The essays have prompted me to delve further into researching many of these fascinating and inspirational women. I truly believe this is a must have book for all women old and young.

This book feels like interruptions happen over and over.

It is well written and very rarely political, except for political trailblazers like Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro. So inspiring to read the stories of women astronauts, Olympic medal winners and other notable women who accomplished amazing things despite the glass ceiling that holds us back!

Several times I was confused about who was writing a passage and met too many long sentences with inserted phrases in parentheses. As I read, I would have to go back and dissect the sentences to establish the meaning.
Persevering, however, what a treasure trove of woman from all walks of life and from around the world. Only someone with Hillary's background would have personal contact or knowledge about them. History textbook publishers should take note and include some of these women in their offerings today!
I read some other political-motivated reviews about this book that spewed the rhetoric that is so familiar in the present era. They represent what woman have been facing for years. I'm Republican and have been on the ticket for 25 years locally, successfully, but I feel this book is a keeper for every public library and every high school library. These women are amazing in what they have accomplished for a free democratic society. I'm sure there were men who agreed with them, but they were obviously the leaders and change-makers.

I really enjoyed the conversational, yet highly informational style. If you're looking for a minutely detailed biography of any of these women, this is not it, nor is it meant to be. It is both an introduction and a celebration of women who enriched the lives of others. As I read, I felt like I was becoming reacquainted with old friends--Anne Frank, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Maya Angelou to name a few. But I also met gutsy women new to me like Dr. Hawa Abdi and Tatyana McFadden. For the one star reviewers down the web page who clearly didn't read the book and just came to bash the Clintons, perhaps you could display some courage and go to the library to borrow a free copy and read about women throughout history who didn't sit around bashing others but actually stood up to make the world a better place.

Of course any collection of multiple biographies of this kind is subject to the author's (or, in this case the authors') personal choice of subjects for inclusion. Here I liked the emphasis on women of the Americas - an understandable bias given the nationality of the two authors - since it introduced me to the life and works of a lot of notable women about whom I knew little or nothing. (In fact, the less I knew about any particular subject, the more valuable I found that chapter; this book can only have been intended as an introduction to these women's lives. I really appreciated being able to note in the Kindle edition which women I wanted to investigate further and to add details of any relevant autobiographical or biographical works.)

Considerable thought had been given to layout of the book, with the result that it was clear whether each woman was included at the instigation of Hillary or Chelsea, and whether the other author had added her perspective on on her co-author's choice. Highlighting key quotes from each woman was also a thoughtful touch.

Thoroughly recommended.
