Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this album from one of Ireland's most respected Rock bands of the '70s. Horslips released many superb albums along the way, becoming Ireland's best Folk-Rock and Progressive band. The Book of Invasions was originally released in 1977, subtitled "A Celtic Symphony," was, like the Tain, inspired by Irish mythology, this time the story of Tuatha de Danann's conquest of ancient pre-Christian Ireland. Talking Elephant. 2009.

I waited more than a decade for this Album to be remastered and re-released. The wait was worth it.

This is definitely a clear, crisp, clean presentation of Horslips at their best. This concept album blends Irish mythology with ancient Celtic musical styles to transport the listener to a Medieval setting that conjures up the mist and mire of the bogs and forests of a time long past.

The Album is named for the Lebor Gabála Érenn, a book of Irish mythology known as The Book of Invasions in English. Released in 1976, it is considered by many, myself included, to be the best work of a band who should be regarded as the fathers of Celtic rock for their fusion of traditional Irish music with rock music.

Every track is wonderful and distinct but all combine a rhythmic charm with vivid lyrics recounting tales of love, unity, power and glory.

If you like Irish Folklore or Celtic music with a lean toward Rock Music, this is a must buy!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Horslips - The Book of Invasions - first remastered release of this album on CD from Outlet/Homespun with album cover artwork.

Tracks are:

1. Daybreak

2. March into Trouble

3. Trouble With a Capital T

4. The Power and the Glory

5. The Rocks Remain

6. Dusk

7. Sword of Light

8. Dark

9. Warm Sweet Breath of Love

10. Fantasia - My Lagan Love

11. King of Morning, Queen of Day

12. Sideways to the Sun

13. Drive the Cold Winter Away

14. Ride to Hell

This is the out of print first digitally "re-mastered" version of this album to appear on CD, and has fancier artwork than its original release on Outlet/Homespun. A nice collectible piece for the Horslips fan that has everything, but for a first time fan I recommend picking up the newer remaster on Demon records which was released under direct supervision by the band after they reacquired their back catalog.

I've loved folk, folk-rock and prog for years, but somehow never managed to hear a Horslips (who combined all three) album until I ordered this one. I just got my copy of "Book of Invasions" recently and have only had the chance to listen to it straight through a couple times, but I already love it and I know I'll grow to love it more as I hear it more. Highly recommended in particular to fans of Irish trad music and Jethro Tull. Now, time to explore more of the Horslips discography...
