About the Author
Matthew Famiglietti’s story is gripping, awe-inspiring, and unforgettable. Born with cerebral palsy and hospitalized for the first several years of his life, he left the hospital as a young boy to live in the Projects at Smith Street in Poughkeepsie, New York. His family moved to Charleston when his mother fled domestic abuse in New York. There, his mother courageously fought the system to get him educated. He tells the first-hand story of the civil rights movement as it unfolded in his own school and the movement to integrate disabled children into the mainstream. He developed a keen interest in politics and justice. Against the odds, Matthew graduated from high school, then from college, and finally from Law School. He went on to marry, and then to open a successful law office first in South Carolina and finally in Washington, DC. Matthew has been politically active all his life, working to improve the lives of others.
