About the Author
In 2000, Teach for America alumnus and Yale graduate Zeke Vanderhoek had a radical idea: students learn better from better teachers. His vision of what test prep could be if written and taught by great educators led him to start Manhattan Prep. Since we began, Manhattan Prep has grown from a boutique tutoring company to one of the world’s leading test prep providers, offering GMAT, GRE, LSAT, ACT, and SAT courses and tutoring worldwide.
We believe test prep should be real education. From our instructors to our materials, we work to teach you the skills you’ll need to succeed on the test, in school, and beyond.

I have worked all of the problems in the book now, myself, with the exception of the last math chapter, and I think this is a great resource for brushing up on concepts that will be represented on the test, as well as for general test taking strategies. The book doesn't spend time on specific test taking strategies, but after timing myself on a few tests, I was able to identify sections where I was working too slowly, then try different techniques to move more quickly without missing questions. My times and scores definitely improved as I did more problems, and with SO many problems to do, I made significant improvement in my time.
The book includes explanations of the answers. I was occasionally disappointed in the answers, especially on the reading section, where the answers are a little less black and white, but overall, answers were well explained and I learned a lot from going back through my missed questions. I thought it was most valuable and rewarding to try to understand why a particular problem was incorrect, then go on to another test where I would find a similar question and be able to answer it correctly because of having read a previous explanation. My only concern with my own kids is that they will not be patient enough to go back through every missed problem to understand WHY, and I feel like that is where the learning really happens. Of course, this could be a problem with any set of practice problems.
As the book says right from the beginning, it is no substitute for The Real ACT Prep book, which has a new 2016-2017 Edition available. It includes 3 actual ACT tests from previous years. I also have that book, and I like that it includes more thorough descriptions of why answers are NOT correct. It also includes whole chapters about improving your score on a particular section of the test, which is very useful! I did the first practice test (a real test from a previous year) in the Real ACT Prep book, and was impressed with how similar the problems from this 5 lb. book are to the questions on the real test.
I am on my second kid taking these tests, so a fair number of prep books have cycled through our house. This is the physically largest one. Many test books will claim to have 10 or so tests, but only 2 are actually contained in the book and the rest are available online for you to print, with your paper and ink. This book is all print.
Chapter 1 is an intro.
Chapter 2 is a diagnostic test, so the student can find areas of strength or weakness.
This book contains 610 English problems, 500 Math problems, 345 Reading problems and 343 Science problems with answers and EXPLANATIONS. It is that last part that is important because just having the answer is of no help whatsoever if you do not understand why you missed it. We had this issue with prep for my son, although I could figure out the answers for the math and science sections, I often had no idea about the logic behind the answers for punctuation problems. I checked the explanations for the math and science sections (as I can judge these) and found them clear and straightforward. One thing that drives me batty about the ACT is the science section, it really should be called “Can you read and interpret a table, chart or graph”. I really do not feel this measures “science” but that is not the fault of this book. The explanations given here were also fine.
The paper is also nice, some of the books have paper that feels like old newsprint, this is not the quality of a reading book , but is fine for a one time use.
The size of the book may be intimidating for students but it is excellent to have it all printed out. It is not exactly portable however, unless you are also weight training.
And after you are done, you can use it as a booster seat for small children or short adults.
