But I was wrong.
The Book of Riley is surprisingly fun and heartwarming with just enough zombie gore. The animals are pretty hilarious and easily take the spotlight away from the humans (the daughter is a bit of an idiot I must confess. BenBen is a delightful goof, Patches is a sneaky jacka** (Mrs Denaux, anyone?), and Riley saves the day, day after day, even if she is a lil slow at times and needs the help of Patches.
I will definitely be reading all four books and hope that there will be more to come!
This is the first part of a serial. Some people seem to think that serials are just ways to get more money. I have found that they usually don't cost that much more than a book of the same length. I do prefer if there is a good stopping point even if it leaves a lot unanswered. That way it is more like a TV show or a comic book.
I enjoyed the way that the story is told from the point of view of the animals. It gives a fresh take on the zombie genre which tends to all sound alike lately. The interaction between the animals adds a lighter touch to the story which helps to keep it from sinking into the trap that so many other zombie tales fall. The story is still full of suspense and horror but the lighter side of dog and cat interaction keeps it from becoming overwhelming without being silly.
I will look forward to continuing the serial.
I laughed out loud when Riley described eating the butter, since my own dog just snagged a new carton of butter out of the grocery bag & ate one stick before we knew she had gotten it.
Riley decided to give Ben-Ben & Patches more credit. "He had more than proven his worth to me last night & I would forgive him many things I had previously found bothersome."
I gave it five stars because it was fast moving & entertaining from start to finish. I will look for more of Mark Tufo's writing. He is a gifted story teller.
I received a complimentary kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.

These animals are displaying signs of extreme intelligence that most people would be amazed by. Showing Jesse where the keys are in the bumper, hunting for them all....I would be questioning why zombies exist and if the dog could understand what I said and then figure out how to communicate.
The audio version of this book is nice for anyone who wants to listen to it. Though it was confusing they chose a male narrator when the main character, RIley, is female.
This was a fast and fun gory read that was non-stop from start to finish. You might just want to give your pets a few extra treats tonight, just because you never know when you'll need them to save your life.
Seriously, this is a great piece of zombie fiction and I am eager to read more!
Part 1 of 4.
