But I was wrong.
The Book of Riley is surprisingly fun and heartwarming with just enough zombie gore. The animals are pretty hilarious and easily take the spotlight away from the humans (the daughter is a bit of an idiot I must confess. BenBen is a delightful goof, Patches is a sneaky jacka** (Mrs Denaux, anyone?), and Riley saves the day, day after day, even if she is a lil slow at times and needs the help of Patches.
I will definitely be reading all four books and hope that there will be more to come!
This is the first part of a serial. Some people seem to think that serials are just ways to get more money. I have found that they usually don't cost that much more than a book of the same length. I do prefer if there is a good stopping point even if it leaves a lot unanswered. That way it is more like a TV show or a comic book.
I enjoyed the way that the story is told from the point of view of the animals. It gives a fresh take on the zombie genre which tends to all sound alike lately. The interaction between the animals adds a lighter touch to the story which helps to keep it from sinking into the trap that so many other zombie tales fall. The story is still full of suspense and horror but the lighter side of dog and cat interaction keeps it from becoming overwhelming without being silly.
I will look forward to continuing the serial.
This was a fast and fun gory read that was non-stop from start to finish. You might just want to give your pets a few extra treats tonight, just because you never know when you'll need them to save your life.
Seriously, this is a great piece of zombie fiction and I am eager to read more!
It was difficult to follow some of the language used, i.e.: fake skins. Took me a minute to figure out it was clothes.
I may take a look at book 2.
Again, I was truly hoping for more stubborness, silliness, drewling, slobbering, loving, snuggling-thinking it is a lap dog & not understanding it weighs 120lbs., etc...
The part I do agree with is an American Bulldog will protect its Alpha and family to the end. #americanbulldogs
This is a zombie tale, told through the mind of a dog. She's an American Bulldog, her pack originally consists of an alpha male and female human, a couple of human cubs including an infant, a Yorkshire Terrier and a cat (who Riley isn't a big fan of). But then one night some intruders enter the backyard, they are also two legged like the alphas in her pack, but different too. They are also a huge threat to the pack. The pack must flee and we experience everything through Riley's experiences. I haven't read a zombie outbreak through the mind of a dog before and this was a lot of fun. It's more like a cartoon dog experience than you believing your actually inside a dog's head like say A Dog's Purpose by W Bruce Cameron was, but that doesn't matter. The dog has conversations with a cat for one. The mind of the dog's narration also had me keep picturing it as a male too rather than the female it was, but that doesn't matter. This is a really cool adventure, I'll definitely check out other books by this author, including the rest of Riley's mission to protect her pack.
