Must Have. For rock n roll fanatics

The lists are compiled from the music world up to the early 80's. It is a fantastic book of fun topics. Some simple like "Greatest Band Names" or "Best Bass Players", but it also has some more in depth lists like "Best Live Albums", "Best Debut Albums" and more. Those familiar with the Bathroom Reader Series, well it is very much similar . Rock had its golden period from about 1957-1983 and this book covers that era.

This was published in 1984.

There is some interesting information in this book. It's deceptive and confusing, because you'll be reading a clearly factual list and the next list will be opinion.

The writer even includes himself in a list of greatest rock critics. Perhaps this is done with a wink?

Because public opinion changes, it's interesting to stumble upon lists (soft rock, for example) that a contemporary critic might approach with a more open mind.

Fun, like an old box from the attic. Certainly dated. Nice if you like trash and treasure.

Great info but take some of it with a grain of salt

I hemmed and hawed a bit between 3 and 4 stars and finally decided that Dave Marsh's ego was offensive enough to drop it to 3. Don't get me wrong, I loved most of the material in this book but where I separate from the 5-star reviewers is when Marsh makes ridiculous statements which don't stand up to scrutiny.

He refers to the Four Preps in the mid-60s as a pop vocal group whose career was about to be destroyed by the Beatles (No question about that!). But then says that they were probably wishing that was the full extent of their problem. The obvious insinuation being that the Four Preps were lackluster performers. (Which they were anything but!). Later on in the book the Great One lists the 40 worst #1 hits. The first two songs on the list are Debbie Reynolds' "Tammy" and Jummie Rodgers' "Honeycomb". Apparently Marsh is trying to convey the impression that he is hip by trashing two of the best songs of the 50s. The low point of "Rock Lists" is Marsh's commentary concerning the censorship of Body Counts' "Cop Killer" which he interprets simply as a political statement against police forces that prey on minorities. Give me a break Dave! Tell the kids to go out and kill a cop and that will solve everything?

Bottom line is: great information overall but don't take all of the opinions and philosophizing as gospel.

I've had the book for years. It is very informative and entertaining, but like some of the previous reviews, one has to consider the source. For example, Dave Marsh gives a list of the ten best rock publications, including their "best" years, those years being during which he was an editor. Also, the Who and Bruce Springsteen can do no wrong, while the Eagles can do no right. Certainly not unbiased, so taken with a grain of salt, it's a good read.

The Book of Rock Lists is a must for all rock trivia buffs!

In this book, Dave Marsh has compiled the definitive lists of the best and the worst that rock 'n' roll has to offer. Drawing from his experience as a rock critic for Rolling Stone magazine, he has covered every aspect of rock 'n' roll, from musicians to songwriters, from attitude to publicity. Along with his own opinions and information, he has gathered the input of other select critics and musicians. Irreverent and witty, this book is a great read. No one with aspirations of being a master of rock trivia should be without it. Where else can you get a list of all the best records that never made it to #1? Who else has compiled a list of the absolute silliest band names to come out of the 60's? Where else can you get good advice like "Don't let the roadie handle your valuable guitar. I have a box of toothpicks that used to be a Les Paul"? This book is now out of print, but it is worth the wait to find a used copy.

Book of Rock Opinions disguised as lists

What a pile of opinionated and egotistical drivel. Anyone with even a marginal knowledge of rock history will shake their head at either the blatant errors or just the obnoxious opinionated junk contained within.

Put it in the bathroom for emergencies.
