The formatting and editing was excellent, a definite improvement over the average eBook offering in this genre.
This book represents what good fantasy novels should be. The ideas were unique and creative. From start to finish, the reader is intrigued by the narrative and characters and has questions that keeps him/her reading to see what unfolds. The story conveys a sense of wonder and offers readers the delight of exploring strange and unexpected places and things. I'm in my fifties, but the fact that the characters are young people does not ruin my enjoyment. Many adults have fallen in love with the Harry Potter novels for the same reason: readers of any age can escape the mundane, and experience amazing adventures.
My only complaint with this book is that it doesn't really wrap up with an "ending," but I don't see any way around that without writing a book at least two or three times this length. It's obvious that the characters' unfolding understanding of the mysterious book by the end of this story sets the stage for subsequent novels. I see books 2 and 3 are available and have downloaded book 2. Book 3 is currently quite a bit more expensive, so I'll see how much I like book 2, and decide whether to continue the series.
If you typically read in the fantasy genre, you should find this book enjoyable, whether you're a young person, or simply young at heart. I hope I never grow too old to lose my sense of wonder and adventure and my enjoyment of places and experiences beyond the "real world."
