Editorial Reviews

2013 release from the Alt-Rock/Avant-Garde instrumental band. Listeners have come to expect a lot from Secret Chiefs 3. for Book of Souls, second in the band's mega-trilogy (first being Book of Horizons, 2004), they demand nothing less than a vertigo-inducing follow-up. True to expectation, Book of Souls: Folio a is a full-length album densely packed with musical skyscrapers. Over a decade in the making, it's Secret Chiefs 3's most elaborate work yet.

This second album in the Secret Chiefs 3's "Book of Truth" trilogy is a monumental triumph. Aside from its wide array of musical styles and sounds, the album features meticulous production from beginning to end. It is accessible, enchanting, and rewarding.

There are thirteen tracks present; seven songs comprise the majority of the album, separated by six short and elaborate soundtracks which resemble radio station identifier sounds. As such, the album is balanced and flows smoothly in spite of its ambitious variety. The seven SC3 sub-bands are all present and occasionally integrated for the first time: each sub-band has their own full-length song, with two exceptions (Holy Vehm and NT Fan) making appearances in the radio-themed tracks.

Although more could be written about this album, words are a poor substitute for the blissful experience of hearing it. As a music lover for four decades, it has my highest recommendation.

A two star review for a SC3 record?!!! I never thought I would see that day either, but this rating is more for the release than the musical content. With all the language used to promote this record (skyscrapers...etc) you would think you're getting the greatest record of the century. Instead we get a record of rarities barely going over the half hour mark, with the length extended by pointless cheesy interludes (the track titles are more interesting!). Apparently this is only half the album!!! Why release half an album?!!! What happened to the other half?!!! And if it's half an album shouldn't it cost half as much?!!

And then there's the artwork which is nothing more than some scraps of drawings and rehashing/cutting and pasting of older artwork. Compare this to Book of Horizons whose artwork took a year to finish. Is this really his lifetime's work? Because Spruance doesn't seem to be taking this trilogy thing very seriously.

And here's the beauty: only few months after it's release WOM release 4 new tracks on vinyl. So why weren't those added on this album to at least make it a proper full length record. Plus we get a silly alienating disclaimer defending this strange tactic and attitude that's basically telling the dissatisfied fans to be grateful for this half record and to not buy the vinyls if they're easily disappointed. Can't SC3 take honest criticism? Or is this guilt knowing that they promised so much but failed to deliver and are instead just dusting off some old material and repackaging it. Apparently the album versions are dynamic reworkings of the older tracks and are "radically" different. To be honest I didn't notice anything radical or even a remote difference in any of these reworkings. A remix is not a "radical" reworking.

I was initially let down in my first 6-7 listens but it kept giving me awesome complexities and emotions and I find that kind of different than their other albums. I do agree with one of the other reviewers that it seems to be a more blended up version of the previous SC3 albums/bands. I like it more than I thought I did in the first month and now believe it is a really good album even though it is short.

no band really can compare with the audio alchemy and black magic this band can conjure up, trey spruance is one of those overlooked geniuses of our time, and sadly he probably will never gain much success until he is long dead, but for those who recognize it now should feel blessed to let this music grace your ear drums. like all other chiefs albums they grow on you over time and book of souls has that same effect. i'd compare it to book of horizons without the death metal bursts, i really like the halloween version here, I've seen them live many times and they always play halloween but have yet to hear a good recording of it until now. thanks trey!

I really like this album. The more I listen to it, the more nuances I find. I would consider it somewhat approachable for non-SC3 fans. But it won't be for everyone. La Chanson de jacky with Mike Patton on vocals is really fun.

I agree with Kadir, Spruance is one of the great composers and this was a let down. Especially after the promise of Book of Horizons. Personally I don't understand why Holy Vehm isn't being explored more, Hypostasis of the Archons showed some interesting directions that I wish Trey would extrapolate on more. But seriously, every sc3 album, even the collections, has been a wonder, and this one sounded like any other cheeky prog band. Sorry for the harsh words, but the disappointment ( and the hope that folio b will be a masterpiece) run deep.

Let me start by saying that I'm a huge SC3 fan, since the late 90s. The music is good, as expected, but half of the tracks are short, with filler noises that IMO don't qualify as real songs. I know they are "arteests" so they can do that... but I would have preferred an album with more solid songs like Book M (or even BoH to some degree).

La Chanson de Jacky (track 11) is certainly a surprise, and it's also pretty hilarious. The songs that are full songs I easily rate 5 stars. The removal of a star is due to the shortness of the album.
