2 Terabytes is plenty of space. I agree with another reviewer that this is indeed a great backup drive for Mac users. Quiet and Fast, you can't go wrong. My only issue is it's a bit pricey and it would be nice to see the price come down somewhat.
I plugged it into the wall, and into the computer. I went to my Mac settings and opened Time Machine, and maybe had to click two or three simple, clear setup questions, and it just started rolling on all on its own. I easily enabled automated backups and password protection of backups and settings. I really liked how simple it was to set up. No need to be an expert.
Once set up, it started to count down 120 seconds to its first back up. I kept using my computer (web browsing and email mostly), and didn't notice any deterioration of performance once the back up started (might have been different if I'd been doing a lot of graphics or media work). An hour later, I was all backed up. A quick glance at time machine shows me when my next backup will start. A real cakewalk.
In fact, it's so easy, I've decided to get one for my mother (who's still learning how to use a thumb drive effectively, just to give you a sense of technical expertise required). While it's true I'll set it up for her, not have her try to set it up on her own, I'm confident that once it is up, she'll never have to worry about it.
- Anyone can use this. It's very easy: just plug it in and open Time Machine.Read more ›

On my Macbook Pro with Retina Display, the My Book delivered read and write speeds of about 150 megabytes per second using a video performance test from Black Magic Design. This is on par with a similar Thunderbolt-based drive I tested from Seagate last month. It's certainly more than adequate for most desktop computer tasks and will make for an excellent Time Machine backup drive.
If you're using this as a backup drive I'd suggest buying two. The reason being is that it's always a good practice to have your important data stored off site in addition to an onsite backup. Mac OS X supports multiple Time Machine drives making it very easy to maintain a good offsite backup strategy.
Other than that this is a very simple hard drive that just plain works. No need to install any software or configure it. Plug it in and it's ready to go.
Opening the drive for the first time, you will find that it comes with a "WD apps" dmg file which when opened has two programs: WD Drive Utilities and WD Security. There is also an extras folder as with the manuals (in about 20 different languages) and something called "WD + Turbo installer" The description says they are performance based turbo drivers (both 1394 and USB - 32 and 64 bit). I installed the USB 64 bit, but cannot tell any difference so far. The manual has no specifics on what exactly it is supposed to do other than to say it will create an "enhanced performance" drive.
WD Drive Utilities Has "Diagnostics", "Sleep timer", "Drive Erase" and "Registration". All I think are self-explanatory. Sleep timer is probably the most useful as it will allow you to control when the drive power downs when not in use. For an external drive, I think this is a very important feature as it will prolong the life of the drive and also save energy.
WD Security gives you the option of both password protection and hardware encryption on the drive. Setup is simple just follow the steps and set a password.
It runs quiet and cool. I have had it plugged in and running for a few hours now moving some files back and forth to test its speed and performance.Read more ›
