Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Future stylists and fashionistas can pick up some good tips on dressing for body type, style, and shopping; however, a lot of the advice seems more appropriate for recent college graduates than for teens. Average high school students would probably not find the need for the recommended four dressy dresses, including two versions of the little black dress, three pairs of dress pants, or a tailored suit, appropriate for job interviews. Body types and the clothing that flatters each type are presented. "Case in Point" boxes explain how they work with their body type to play up their best features and encourage readers to re-create celebrity looks. Readers are counseled to stay within budget; experience the joys of thrift, consignment, and online shopping; and not to invest heavily in trendy items. The book is well organized. Flaherty encourages readers to learn from her but to find their own style. A worthy attempt to showcase models of normal body weight is negated by the use of listless illustrations of people who appear much older than the targeted audience. A final section on career options covers internships and paths to various styling careers. Although this book contains lots of good ideas and sound advice, the lack of stylish photos or models makes it suitable for serious fashion readers, not casual browsers or fans of fashion magazines. From Booklist

Are you a glam-girl dresser like J-Lo? Or is Boho more your style? Fashionistas and budding stylists—or those hoping to cultivate a “look”—will find all they need to know in this guide from expert Flaherty. One of the keys to owning your outfit is knowing your body type: hourglass, inverted triangle, rectangle, apple, or pear (while the sketch illustrations don’t help to distinguish between the five types, the text does). This book, geared entirely toward girls, also discusses color, complexion, and confidence. Once you’ve identified your body type and style, it’s time to “curate your closet” by assessing, pruning, and reorganizing—then, best of all, buying. The book ends with tips on styling others and how to parlay your love of fashion into a career. The illustrations throughout look like something you’d see on a designer’s sketch pad, and there are plenty of bright colors, but text and illustrations will need updating to stay au courant. There are many, many girls out there who are going to read this cover to cover, especially when they’ve finished this month’s Teen Vogue. Grades 8-12. --Ann Kelley

I saw this book as a "Must Read" in People's style issue and immediately ordered it. People was right!!! This book is amazing and should be in any fashionista's collection. I am the girl who walks into her closet every morning before work, every time I have a date and really every time I leave my house and think that I have nothing to wear and then stand there for a solid ten minutes not knowing what to put on. This book really showed me how to mix and match pieces that I already own to flaunt not only my figure (it tells you how to identify your shape and how to dress best for that shape... hello hourglass) but show my style. As the other reviews mention there are awesome tips on consignment shopping and how to integrate vintage looks and make them contemporary. This book is great for ladies of all ages (I bought my mom one) and will be my go to birthday present and stocking-stuffer for all my girlfriends!

I bought this book as a gift, but before wrapping it for my cousin my coworker and I read through it during lunch yesterday. The first comment was how awesome the illustrations are--it's not a bunch of stick-figure girls wearing unstructured clothes that would look awful on most women. Instead, the images really spoke to the different styles that go with different body types. As someone who is well-versed in the photoshop craziness that happens in fashion magazines, I found myself thinking "whoa.. I COULD wear that!" as I flipped through the book. I also liked the tips on consignment/thrift shopping. I typically end up with a lot of stuff I love, but I'm not that great about weaving it altogether. Needless to say I am excited to pass along this gift to my cuz!!

My mind was blown. It is incredible how any style can fit anyone. You just have to know how to dress yourself and find what fits you and your comfortability. Ms. Flaherty does a phenomenal job in making fashion fun. I learned so many new things from this publication and cannot emphasis enough how it has changed my shopping habits around. The illustrations speak so true. Every girl should have this, it makes a great gift for young and old alike. Best purchase I have made in a very long time. It's my first-aid, emergency, go-to book for any occasion!

Style should be an innate feeling, unfortunately some people lack that.
As soon who's read several fashion guides from Rachel Zoe, Tim Gunn and Victoria Beckham... I think Somer's straight-forward approach is refreshing and not at all pretentious. Truth be told, I will likely never be able to fill my closet with Lanvin, Pucci nor Gucci (among the numerous brands that fluff up typical fashion books). I want to know how to dress for my size, my features and this book does just that. I love the sketches; I don't know if it was intentional, but I like the lack of model images.
Simple and fresh, I'd recommend this book to girls starting college and even those entering the work force.

My granddaughter, who is 15 years old requested a fashion book of some kind for Christmas. Read the description of this particular book and thought it would be the perfect book for her. She simply loved it.

Overall, "The Book of Styling" is an easy read, especially for the individual searching for their own style, or for those who may not know their style yet this is probably the book for you. Somer's book contains 9 Chapters, containing information on various topics, from "Finding Your Look," "The Elements of Style," to "Styling Others."The key point I would take away from this book and did enjoy about this book was the acronym TREND - which means T-Truthful, R-Reasonable, E- Exciting, N- Never neglectful of the necessities, D- Detail Oriented."

Being a "fashionista-in-training", I found a lot of solid information in this book that actually pertained to ME and to people like me. (You know, us regular peeps with regular occupations and not a ton of money to spend decorating a walk-in closet.) It helped me find my way to flattering looks for my body type (5'3" and curvy) and my coloring. So it's not just for tall, thin people. I loved the illustrations, too, which were of women all different sizes.
