I have given this book as a gift and try to pass the positive thinking to friends as well.
Thank you Gary for sharing.
I decided then and there that I wanted to read this book. It's a book
that you can pick up and read maybe one or two chapters at a time to think
about the meaning, to ponder. I certainly got a lot out of it and I think
it is much needed in these hectic busy times. It's a book I will keep and
return to many times.
That doesn't make it less valuable. After all, the author says it's not a how to book; it's a why not book, and he's absolutely right.
To be honest with you, it reminded me of one of my all time favorite inspirational books All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. In that book, the author uses stories to teach life lessons, as well as inspire us to live a great life.
This book does that, and then it goes way beyond that with the author's own little spin on the philosophy of Zen. You will be inspired, but you'll avoid some of the "circular speak" I've found in Zen that made it confusing. This book does, however, do far more than just tell you stories to make you feel good. Reading just one "chapter" per week, it will allow you to shift your viewpoint and see the world in a whole new way, a good way.
Regardless of your philosophy on life, your religion, or anything else that might color your vision of what the world looks like, you'll enjoy this book, and it's well worth the read. And don't just read it one time. Read it over and over. You'll be glad you did.
I've picked up a lot of other books on the topic, but this was the first Szen book that I've read. I have to say I was very pleased. The stories all seem very personal and touching and I felt like I could easily relate.
This book has opened my eyes to some of the issues I wasn't even aware that I had. I realized I've been living a much more difficult life than I needed to live and I'm taking actions to breathe easier and stop to smell the roses, so to speak. I was speeding through my life, just muddling though, only trying to get to the next day that I didn't even realize how much I was missing right in front of me. It's also helped me lower my stress levels.
Great book and a special thanks to the author for allowing readers the valuable insight this book offers.
