I tested the drive on a 2011 iMac and 2011 MacBook Air and performance was excellent. What I like the most about this drive is that it is currently the quietest Thunderbolt drive on the market today. The unit uses two Western Digital Green drives and this results in lower power consumption and the ability to cool without need of a noisy fan. I compared the unit to a 6TB Lacie 2Big Thunderbolt system and the difference in noise level was enormous. The Lacie unit uses a Fan and when resuming from sleep makes a fairly loud groaning sound. The WD drive by comparison is almost silent.

The quiet operation comes at a cost however . Speed of reading and writing data is significantly slower than the Lacie 2Big unit. The My Book Thunderbolt operating in RAID 0 read data at a rate of about 220 MB/sec while the Lacie 2Big provided about 310 Mb/sec performance. This can be accounted for by the Green drives used in the My Book being only 5900 RPM drives versus the noisier 7200 RPM drives in the Lacie. Now is the user ever going to be able to tell the difference? Probably not because in most cases one will be transferring data from a much slower internal hard drive that provides maybe 120-130 Mb/s. For almost any application I can think of the speed of the My Book will be adequate. This unit is just plain easier to live with than the noisy competition.

I observed only one problem with the drive and that is that it refused to sleep automatically when connected to a 2011 iMac. It would sleep if I commanded it however. I did some research and it seems that for Thunderbolt drives it is left entirely up to Apple to provide firmware and OS compatibility updates for the Mac used. Western Digital it seems does not provide firmware updates for its Thunderbolt drives.

The drive itself is really quiet. The setup is simple and fast. I use this drive as a backup drive with my MacBook Pro using TimeMachine. I therefore configured the drive for RAID 1 mode, mirroring of data (disks). The goal is obvious, if one drive fails you still have access to your data on the mirrored drive. If a drive fails you can rebuild the other drive...This is what happened just 1 day after I purchased the drive. Drive A failed and the software shows the drive as "degraded" and starts the rebuild process.

The problem with this drive is
a) rebuild of a drive takes more than 2 days (two!, not a typo)
b) your MacBook needs to stay connected during the entire rebuild process (> 2 days)!
c) during the rebuild process you can not reboot your MAC...rebuild will start all over again.

Not being able to take my MacBook Laptop with me for 2 days or not being able to take it even into another room is a show stopper for me.

So, I called technical support. They claim it will take 2 days to rebuild a drive. In my initial test rebuilding 6% of the drive took 8 hours...you can do the math....

The G-Drive disk I used before had a hardware RAID controller build in, rebuild just takes ~ 4 hours for 1 TB without! the requirement to be connected to the MacBook.

Update: July 20, 2012
20% Rebuild of the drive took 27h
27% 37hours
thus complete rebuild will take 5days and 15 hours.

The double Thunderbolt is now connected and I've been using it for video. (Previously I was using the Passport, which got full and with my updated video software is now only serving as an archive.) Once again, I'm editing video projects using the latest version of Final Cut Pro X. The thunderbolt has not missed a beat, throwing video files back and forth as well as enabling faster import times into FCP-X. Import times are critical because you can wait long enough to drink a pot of coffee if your drive is not fast enough. The thunderbolt interface is a lightning rail into the Mac, sending data at incredible rates, enabling my video files to be available for use in reasonably short periods of time. Once the video is available and I'm editing, there is NO stutter as the drive moves from clip to clip. My projects are now approaching fifteen minutes of runtime, which means a large, fast drive, is critical and this thunderbolt is doing well. Surprisingly, this drive makes virtually no noise. I expected something to hum or growl, but only get a very very quiet whirr. The only downside is this drive is not easy to tote with you. Keep it on the desk or in the rack. I'm anxious to see how quickly I fill this one with my projects.

I've been looking forward to seeing improved external storage options for the Mac for some time.

MacBooks and iMacs have been gaining in popularity for some time, but they remain very limited as far as storage expansion is concerned. Until Thunderbolt came out, Firewire 800 was about the best you could do, unless you were able to find an E-SATA card. USB 2.0 drives seem fast on paper, but tend to be best at small file transfers, they begin to bog down badly on sustained I/O.

I've been using Firewire 800 drives on my iMac for video processing but have found them to be much slower than the internal drive. I was thrilled when my Thunderbolt Duo showed up in the mail the other day.

There are several features about the Thunderbolt Duo that are extremely appealing:

Connections:
Thunderbolt! I've been watching the development of this interface for some time and it showed a great deal of promise. The first drives to be available were horribly expensive and I held off getting one until the price was more reasonable. 10GB/Sec is nothing to sneeze at. One thing to keep in mind: Thunderbolt provides 10G as a data bus, not throughput to a single drive. Even though the connection is capable of 10G, the drive inside the unit cannot pass data that quickly. You will see data speeds to the drive that are nearly identical to the internal hard drive. That in itself is awesome. Not only that, you can daisy-chain several drives together and get near-native speeds to each one.

One thing that's somewhat vexing is that the drive is Thunderbolt-only. It would be nice to have a USB connection so I'm able to attach the drive to other systems, albeit at much slower speeds.
