Review

'The prose is strikingly raw... the cumulative effect is curiously touching.' -- OBSERVER

'These diary entries, childhood reminiscenes and prose from 1999 onwards prove that under the drug hoover's brow there's a unique brain.' -- Q MAGAZINE

'This book is like everything else Pete Doherty has ever done - at times brilliant, at others annoying, but never less than interesting.' -- SOUTHERN DAILY ECHO

About the Author

Aged 16, as winner of a British Council poetry competition, Peter Doherty embarked on poetry tour of Russia. He studied English Literature at the University of London for a year, before forming The Libertines with Carl Barat in the late nineties. They released two albums before falling apart; Babyshambles released 'Down in Albion' in November 2005; the single 'Fuck Forever' reached no.4 in the charts.

This personal and engrossing journal is a collection of insights and musings from the poet/pariah Pete Doherty, lead singer of the British rock band Babyshambles (and formerly of the legendary Libertines). It provides a true devotee a view inside the mind of the troubled troubadour. At times poetic, at times rambling, the prose is like a labyrinth in which you are happy to be lost.

dudes a genius which is a given. however, his handwriting is pretty sloppy and i was unable to read a good portion of the book. its still a nice thing to have, pictures are great and the plain idea that he literally copied his journals and published them makes me love him even more.

Although the book can be difficult to read since it is in Pete's own handwriting, it is very much worth the effort. He shares his thoughts, poetry, pictures, memorabilia, and drawings. This journal shows that Pete is both brilliant and beautiful, albeit complicated.

I will add this after reading other reviews:
If you know anything about Pete (and I assume you do since you're looking at his book), you are probably aware that he has some serious issues in his life. Mainly- his addiction to drugs. If this subject makes you too uncomfortable, then this book isn't for you. Pete is very upfront in his writings and doesn't hold back. That makes me love him even more, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

This book is full of personal journal entries, actual pages in his handwriting, which at times can be difficult to make out. An insightful read, I felt a sense of understanding with him, starting off poor before the Libertines albums. Being in love with Kate Moss, his feeling about life and poetry. Easy to tell that he is a good person, struggling with drug addiction. The press intruding upon him and putting all this unnecessary pressure on him. Pete is a sensitive person who loves to be in a relationship and loves to be loved. His lyrics are proof of his talent and his feelings and honesty.
