I think I have most all the books from Michael Yu, with the big allure for me being the fine illustrations. This one is no slouch in this regard either!

Also, I always gauge a book by how my 7 year old son reacts to it. Of course, being a typical boy, anything with pirates is always a plus, but even he noted the morale of the story- that every person has value in their own unique way- no matter what color, size, etc.

Really hard to say much not in a positive light- except that perhaps it could be longer? You can never have too much of a good thing.

Can't wait until the next one- and neither can my son.

This is a cute 25 page story to show kids that everyone has something to offer. Pirate Pete the littlest pirate saves the crew, after disobeying his captain and following part of the crew to buried treasure. The story also demonstrates that it is great to disobey orders and it pays to be a pirate!

The illustrations are large bright, colorful and a little glossy. The sentence to illustration ratio is about 3:1. The book would have to be read to beginning readers as long words are often used.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this pirate tale.

Formatting Issues

I read this story on my 17" screen using the Kindle App for Pc, The Cloud Reader and the iPad.

Kindle App for PC: 25 story pages with picture and wording on same page. Has the smallest illustration size to page ratio than the other versions, but is still a decent size.
Cloud Reader: On the smallest margin size/smallest font, the illustration and wording are on the same page. By the 3rd margin size, the illustration is on one page with writing on the next, for many of the pages.
iPad: On the next to smallest font, which is quite readable, about wording carries to the next page for about 1/3 of the illustration/wording segments.

A great book for showing little ones they have something to offer, though they may be small still, and encourage them to do what and when they can. My almost 4 year old asks to hear this at least once a week.

This story is so poorly written. Instead of writing a good story, the author just wants to make a point - little people are just as good as bigger people. But the plot is boring and contrived, and my kids were not engaged at all. There is no art at all to the story telling here. It's terrible.

This children's story was fantastic. I loved how the smallest character was the hero in the end. I think this was the part that my children identified with the most. Overall, Michael Yu's children books are always so joyful and colorful to read. They are a welcome addition to our library.

My 4 year old loves this book, and so does my 18 month old! The pictures are so colorful and fun, the 18 month old stay engaged through the words, which keep the 4 year old involved. Good book all around about how little doesn't mean less.

I love the story! It is perfect for young children as well as beginning readers. The story was short and fun. The way it uses the repetitive words is almost a rhyme. Up! UP! UP! went the... :) The illustrations are very colorful too.

Michael Yu's "The Littlest Pirate" is a great read. Like most children's books, it presents a great lesson in a fun way. The story centers on Pirate Pete, the smallest and youngest pirate on a pirate ship. Always being told of his lack of size and his inability to do things because of that, Pete proves his captain and everyone else wrong when he does things that none of the other pirates can. The lesson to be learned, of course, is that no one should let limitations decide what is possible. This is something which everyone -- especially children -- should learn.

The story is told in a very kid-friendly way. Even as an adult, I had a lot of fun reading the story. The characters are described very well, and the pictures that accompany the story really show the emotions and the situations described. I loved reading such stories as a child, and Michael Yu just revived my love of these kinds of stories.

I would recommend this story for parents who want to encourage their young children to read. "The Littlest Pirate" can help children fall in love with reading.
