- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2013"Game of Thrones: Not Only for the Hipsters"
One of the biggest things to hit the television screens in the past few years is "Game of Thrones." This has captured audiences and kept them glued to the proverbial boob tube on Sunday nights. Many moons before some producer decided to bring it to the small screen, George R. R. Martin had put his imagination to paper. With his own style, Martin was able to bring in corruption, adultery, greed, war, loss and even some dragons.
The first thing that really needs to be noted is Martin's writing style. Each chapter is based off of a single character. This makes it easier to get to know each character and how they interact and feel towards other characters. The one thing that can become confusing is the flow of time. One chapter may go for many days or even months and then when the next chapter comes along the reader is taken back in time even further than the previous chapter had started. It makes it very interesting, especially when you want to read about a certain character may have to wait three or five or ten chapters before you get to read about them again.
A major theme in Martin's books is adultery. He does a superb job of making the story flow and the characters grow that the reader may start to doubt their own thoughts on the matter. He does a good job of making the reader decide how important their extramarital affairs play in whether they will be liked or despised. If a character does everything that is considered to be heroic, but decides to sleep outside his own bed and even have bastard children, which is more important, their heroic actions or cheating on their wife? He intertwines differences in all characters. Not all of them cheat and those that do are mixed between the classical good guys and bad guys.
Corruption runs rapid in Martin's fabled lands. It almost seems that it is corruption that is the glue that keeps everything together. He shows its evil head from the lowliest low to the kings. He shows what type of impact corruption has not only on the corrupter but on those around them. While he doesn't not sugar coat the bad that comes with corruption he can also spin it to show how a character cannot reach their goals without it. While modern morality deems that corruption is something that only the wicked would turn to, Martin does a good job of showing the historical significance of having to bribe someone or threaten their life.
War is also at the heart of Martin's books. Again, he pulls on the readers heart strings to decide on who is right and wrong and how sometimes those lines are often blurred. Does the reader root for the guy that has the right to sit the throne or the person that is rumored to be the rightful heir? Does the reader opt to support the boy that has lost his father and is after revenge or the ones this boy has wronged in one way or another? Martin's writing doesn't make the choice very easy in my opinion.
With war comes loss, which is the nature of the beast. Not that all the deaths that occur in this series of books is because of war, but most of them are. I found that these deaths were almost more poignant due to how close I got to them. Referring back to his writing style, Martin makes it so the reader gets to know the various characters. He makes sure to play Switzerland and let the reader decide if they like a character or not. That plays a role in their deaths. For me, I was quite sad to see many of the characters die, but on the flip side, I was quite happy to see others meet their makers.
All in all, this series of books are superb. This is coming from someone that does not usually pick up books in the genre. I was one of those people that watched the first season of "Game of Thrones" and was amazed. I took that as a good sign that I needed to read the books and I am so glad that I did. While they are quite long, I found that the stories are so well written that I forgot how much I had to read to finish a book. In fact, when I finished the fourth book all I could do was wonder when the next one is coming out. I highly recommend this book to those that have fallen for the TV series and even those that haven't. Don't let the idea of dragons and magic scare you away from a terrific story of many lives and deaths, which are all filled with good times, evil times and gallant times.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2012Thanks HBO for the TV series. Without, I probably never would have bought the books. I've never really been in to 'Middle Earth' type fiction so I had never heard of The Game of Thrones and I was unfamiliar with George R. R. Martin. I've only watched the first season of GoT's on TV so far but it was good enough to entice me into buying the books. There was so much going on in the shows that I thought it would be great to get a better understanding of it all from reading the originals. Much to my surprise, the show - so far - follows the books unbelievably close! I don't remember any TV show or Movie adapted from a novel ever being as true as these are! As soon as I started reading this I realized that even the pilot episode aired it's scenes exactly as Martin wrote each chapter...which was very well done!
I won't explain the plot as I'd find it hard to try and sum it up in a brief review anyhow, but I would highly, more highly than any other before, recommend this to anyone who loves reading! You don't have to be a fan of fantasy or medieval literature either. The fact that GoT's is really isn't pertinent to the story. This is by far a more character driven story with many different plot lines and if the author had the time and inclination to do so, could probably dedicate entire novels to each character. There certainly are a lot but each is so well created and woven into this universe. It's easy to empathize with the requisite 'bad guys' when you so clearly can see what drives them, why they are the way they are, and their motives, ambitions, and intentions. Like real life, most characters have both good and bad in them and we get to see all.
Many of us have read books that are real page-turners which we've found hard to put down. I know saying so is cliche, but I found this to be the case here as well and I mean so with all sincerity! And being as large as it is...that's been a problem lol! I've had a few to many late, late nights. I've lingered in the bathroom a little to long on a few occasions enough to worry my family, or at the very least to have them pleading with me to get out for their sake. And I've been guilty of the "just one more chapter..." excuse a few to many times! All this trouble from just 1 book! But it's so worth it!
If I had to criticize anything it would probably be that I found there to be way to many characters. Thankfully I bought this on my Kindle and although I already have come to love that and would be hard pressed to ever go back to dead-tree reading, this book would make any reader appreciate one! I nearly wore out my search function looking up characters genesis, and I used the notes and highlight functions more with this story than all others on my Kindle...combined! Please don't let this scare you away though because never have I read a book in which I so thoroughly enjoyed it that I willingly wanted to study and understand all aspects of it. Plus, my memory leaves much to be desired and as I get older I find I need help anymore once I'm required to memorize more than 5-6 characters per book!
I'll sum up by saying this; if you've watched GoT's on TV and enjoyed any of it...buy this book! If you're just looking for a good story to read and not sure this is your cup of tea...download the free chapter and go from there! This tome, without exaggeration, may be the best I've read ever and I so thoroughly enjoyed it that I don't hesitate to recommend it whatsoever. And hurry..."Winter is Coming"! ;)

Andrew HReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 20115.0 out of 5 stars Blue cover paperback boxset - Excellent Value for money
OK, this is a review to clarify a few things. There seem to be a number of reviews for different versions of this boxset grouped together on amazon - this review is based on the newly released (12th July 11) paperback boxset, with the BLUE box case.
I say review, but this is more to confirm a few things. The novels are excellent, you can read dozens of reviews for these individual books on amazon.
Firstly, each book DOES contain maps at the front. The appendix at the back of the books contain details of the families and Houses featured in the story. Both are very handy for reference. Secondly, the print is nice and crisp.
A word of warning : this boxset contains an companion book. Pay attention to the first page which states it contains spoilers - a flick through could quickly reveal something you haven't read yet and didn't want to know, for example the death of characters!
When you consider the individual RRP price of these books this really does represent great value for money, and should appeal to many fans new to the series on the back of HBO's Game Of Thrones. This boxset does not contain the latest novel in the series, this was only released in hardback on the same day of this boxset release.
EDIT - I'd just like to explain that before release, this boxset contained 9-10 reviews for various other editions of the Game of Thrones/A Song of Fire and Ice boxsets, both in print and Kindle editions, with conflicting reviews about the quality of the print, missing maps, missing books from the set etc. This is why I wrote this review to clarify these points mentioned. Post-release, Amazon initially separated off those reviews, however they now all seem to be grouped under this page again. So please be aware that some of the reviews you read here might be for old editions of this boxset - if the review date is *before* 12th July 2011 then it likely refers to a previous boxset release. Hope this makes sense!
davele1Reviewed in Australia on April 13, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the tv show
I was planning on reading the books, over a few months. I finished the series within a week. The best series, I've ever read.

CortoReviewed in France on August 22, 20115.0 out of 5 stars Une grande œuvre dans un petit coffret
